Can InDesign open a zip disk or do we need to unzip the files first then open them in InDesign?

InDesign cannot "unzip" anything--you need to do a lot of work before you even open InDesign.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Mount the disk.
  2. Look at it at the desktop (Finder).
  3. If you can see anything that looks like the files you want, copy them to the desktop. (I would put them in a separate folder.)
  4. If you don't see any files, check the disk on a Windows computer and copy any files you see.
  5. If neither platform can see the files, you can try a recovery service, but they are not cheap.

At that point, if you CAN see files, you need to see if you can distinguish the type of file each one is.

  • If they have file extensions (.ai, .tif, etc.) your job is easier.
  • If you see a .zip extension on a file, you can double-click on it to decompress it.
  • If you see a .sit or .sitx extention, you need to download the StuffIt Expander from StuffIt.com

If you do NOT see any file extensions, all the files will look like a blank icon.

You will have to look at the old file creator codes with a utility such as http://www.frederikseiffert.de/filetype/

Here is a database of creator codes: https://www.macintoshrepository.org/10422-tcdb-2003-10-type-creator-codes-database-

Note: I have not used this utility or the database--I just did some googling.

Assuming you can identify the file formats, you now have to get them updated.

  • As previously mentioned, AI, PSD, TIFF, JPEG, EPS (probably AI files) will be easy.
  • Your PageMaker files will be a problem. They have to be updated to version 6.5 or 7 if they are not already.
  • Then you will need InDesign CS6 to convert the PageMaker files to InDesign files.
  • Again, check to see if Markzware.com can help you with this step.

If none of this works or you do not want to pay a recovery or conversion service, you are out of luck.

Is it that you want to "Place" a file from your external ZIP drive? As stated before InDesign opens indesign templates (indt), InDesign documents (indd), and indesign backward compatible markup files files (idml), (an InDesign book will not be much use opening unless you have the refferenced indd files).

Try creating a new document and use File > Place… to place the content from your Zip 100 (it cannot be in a compressed folder like ZIP, RAR or SIT,  if so it must first be expanded/extracted)

It might help to see some screen shots of what you are seeing on your computer. re: what shows up in Disk Utility for your ZIP Drive; what's listed for files if you are able to mount it, etc.

You have posted twice on this subject--Zip disks and zip files. The other post was about trying to open old PageMaker files in InDesign.

With all the advice you have received, if you can't get anything working yet, it might be time to hire a consultant to [try to] get your files working.
