Is there a reason for using .svg? Does saving as .AI work?

Yes indeed.
We started out using EPS, so we had one format both for print and for all our users using Powerpoint etc.
However when Microsoft decided not to support EPS, we had to find another format (which also needs to conform with our DAM system). So when InDesign started to support SVG I was so thrilled because now we had a format and one file type that could be used on all platforms so to speak.
So if this is not fixed, we need to go back and work with the EPS in InDesign and SVG for others.
(the reason why we do not use AI directly in InDesign is because we need to share the InDesign package with users and we do not want them to get the native files. We do the same for PSD converted to TIFF/JPG.

Why not PDF?
SVG is an RGB only format, so the black lines in your example will separate as 4-color with print output, which would likely create a registration problem on an offset press.

These SVG's are also to be used by our web team.
I'm aware of the RGB. These illustrations when used in our main print jobs are all converted into greyscale as we only print the content in 1+1.
