I cannot figure out how to get placed text fromWord to flow into a facing page document and keep the footnotes spanned across the columns. It'll do one or the other but not both:
it skips over the B master and adds a C master instead, but it does keep the spanned footnotes
I've also tried creating the master with facing pages but the text still doesn't flow to the left pages.

Check on two things:
Pages panel menu button > Master Options for X Master: Is number of pages 2?
and
File > Document Setup: Is facing pages ON?
One more thing: do any of your paragraph styles have a Keep Options > Start Paragraph > On Next Odd Page turned on inside their options definitions?

Thanks for the response. Yes, I check that. And if I get the facing pages to place properly, then the footnotes spanning doesn't work. It's making me crazy!
This was working then it quit:

Hi pratcliff,
did you solve your issue?
Downloaded your document and did the following:
[1] Went to A Master and threaded the two text frames.
[2] Converted the left one to a Primary Textframe
[3] Copied all the contents to in the story of pages to the clipboard.
[4] Removed all the pages, but page 1
[5] Added one page
[6] Removed the first page
[7] Did a new text frame on the pasteboard of page 1
[8] Pasted the contents of the clipboard to that frame
[9] Filled the cursor with the overflow of the text frame
[10] Removed the text frame so all the text is now in the cursor
[11] Held the Alt key and clicked.
Text flew into the text frame on page 1, in both columns of the frame so that footnotes could span the two columns
[12] Loaded the cursor with the overflowing text of the frame on page 1
[13] Added a new page
[14] Held the Alt key and clicked
More text flew now into the frame on page 2
Did [11] to [14] until all text was placed.
Finally I set the last text frame's option to balance columns.
