Preserving multiple space characters

When multiple space characters next to each other reach the end of a line, InDesign treats them as one space character. Is there a way to have ID treat them as as many characters as there are? In particular, when using several white space characters as a block, ID appears to reduce them to one such space character only at the end of the line. As a result, what was a long space becomes a one-character space. I would like to preserve the space all the characters amount to. Is it possible?

This is for CS4.

Thanks.
