Problem with drop caps - why does the cap type size change if the following character is changed?

Hi

I am having a problem with drop caps in a book. It is set in Adobe Caslon Pro 11/14. I have added drop caps to the first paras of each chapter. I have applied small caps to the remainder of the first word. But I want to increase the pt size of the small caps to 12pt to blend better with the weight of the drop cap. When I do that the drop cap shrinks. Why does the drop cap change if I adjust the size of the following characters? Would appreciate some help. Thanks.

I just tested it: if you use a nested style to apply 12 pt small caps, it works.
