Problem with subsection numbering

Hi! I've searched some of the most recent posts and have been able to use those to create paragraph styles for my different section and subsection numbering. I have three paragraph styles

1 - has number for my sections 1,2, 3 etc.

2 - has numbering for my subsection under each of the main section 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 under section 1.

3 - numbering for the third tier - 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3 under 1.1

It is working rather well throughout my document except to when I get to sections 5 and 6. The third tier numbering keeps repeating. So after 5.6 I get 5.5.1 instead of 5.6.1; and after 5.7 I get 5.5.1 again. I've triple checked  my paragraph styles to no answer. Any help would be appreciated here.  thanks so much!

This post should be helpful:

https://www.rockymountaintraining.com/adobe-indesign-numbering-headings/

The first half explains how to set up your numbered heads using a book file. If you are doing this in a single InDesign file, be sure to read the 2nd half.

If you have any questions, just ask here.

Barb,

thank you so much for the post. I checked my paragraph styles and I had followed the instructions from another post, changing the numbers to 2 in the numberings style fixed the problem, I had a 1 instead - ^1.^2.^#^t.

Thanks a ton!
