Please tell us what operating system (exactly) you're running. Have you tried restoring your InDesign preferences (common troubleshooting step when things go wrong)?

Based on the title of your question I am assuming that you are using InDesign CS5.5 (which is about 8 years old) to open up a file that has been created with a later version of InDesign via an IDML. Do you know exactly which later version the file was created with? Although the IDML format is designed to enable old InDesign versions as far back as CS4 to open files created much later it seems possible that a file created with the current version (CC 2020) that has many features and a type engine far removed from the one used in CS5.5—and may or may not use third party plugins that didn't exist in 2012—might be pushing the boundaries of how much file may be left for the older program to open. That's because any features created for later versions of InDesign will not be there when you open an IDML with an older version. That has always been the trade-off of having a "back-saving" format at all. The file you get is what's left when the later features are taken out.

Can you post the IDML file so other can test it?
