rectangle frame tool

anyone know a way to keep the "x" in the rectangle frame tool without having the "show frame edges" turned on, and also when exported as pdf? sometimes i need to show a client a mockup and i'd like to show the rectangles in place to accept future images but i don't want to see all the frame edges in the document. woud be great to be able to easily assign a stroke to the x. thanks.

If I understand you correctly you want to export this into a PDF?

You can do that by putting a dummy picture into the frame as a placeholder that represents whatever you want showing in the frame. But generally, I put just grey rectangles in.
