Pleaase have a look at the screenshot below...
I am trying to eliminate the space between
According to Joseph Campbell....only birth can conquer....the hero witha thousand faces...
I have tried to reduce the "space above" and "space below" to 0, but nothing has changed...what am I doing wrong?
By the way, I have enabled the "keep together" option so that the first two and the last lines of a paragraph are together...
it's all ok here

It seems that the space after and the space before values are added. And it also seems that your text is locked to the baseline grid, so it could be possible that the actual space between the paragraphs is equal to the grid increment.

Do I really need to work with baseline grid? I find document grid easier to work with

It's up to you… Locking the text to baseline grid ensures that lines will be aligned on left and right pages but it also means that you have more things to check: the text leading must be equal to the baseline grid increment. Seeing your screen capture, it seems that you did not use paragraph styles; it will complicate any further changes in your document, so I am not sure about your InDesign knowledge level…
If you want to work efficiently, especially with long documents, I will strongly advise you to have a look at the help about paragraph and character styles and about the baseline grid.
