text alignment issues within a table

I am stumped and am hoping you call can help -

I've created a table with multiple rows and columns and have inserted the text needed for the document. I've applied text characteristics but for some reason the text won't top align; I've highlighted and entered Align Top, which it shows that tab being selected, but in the document itself the text is still set down in the row. Ideas? I've tried creating a new document and am still seeing same issue. I've gone into Table/CellOptions/Text and not had any luck their either.

By default, tables come with some built-in "Cell Inset". Otherwise, your top-aligned text would butt right up against the stroke at the top of the cell.

"I've gone into Table/CellOptions/Text and not had any luck their either."

That's the right place to go to adjust the Cell Insets, but you must select the cells you want to affect beforehand.

Thanks for the quick response but I’ve all ready tried this with no
success. I feel like I must have somehow changed a style or a setting
inadvertently somewhere as I’ve not encountered this with any other table
I’ve created ...

If the cells have defaulted to an At-Least dimension of height, the cell will shrink-wrap so-to-speak to the volume of the text. Therefore you won't see align to top causing any visible change.

Try setting the Cell or Row Height to Exactly and choose a dimensional measure of height.

Also, consider defining how the cell, column, or row should look and behave by defining cellstyles.

What is the first basline option for each cell?

Select all cells, open the Cell Options, and under the Text tab check what is set for first baseline.

Try setting it to Exact. That way you can simply specify the distance from the top.

Also, check what the top offset for the cell is. I think by default it's 4pt. Sometimes, for short cells, that is enough to push the text all the way down.
