Hi! I have a doc where the pages alternate between the front and back of a flash card. I want to number the backs consecutively without having to do it manually in case i need to remove a card or reorder the cards (1,2,3,...) how do I do this? Page number will skip a number. Section number doesn't seem to work unless setting it up correctly?
This sounds like something that you might need a script for. If nobody here has one that will do this then maybe there is something available that can help at https://redokun.com/blog/indesign-scripts .
You can do it by placing a Text Frame on your master page. And insert a Return.
Setup auto numbering.
This video explains it.

Once you have this setup - you can override all your master pages. https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/indesign/how-to/override-master-pages.html
This will of course override all your master items - something you may not want - but it will only work that way
Just put the master frames you want to override on a separate layer from the non-override layers. For example: zMasters_Locked and zMasters_Override (the "z" is to put them at the bottom of the sort list). Lock the zMaster_Locked layer. When you select all the pages, you can do a master override but it won't affect the locked layers.
Another option is to disable the override option on the master items, but depending on the quantity, the layer method is quicker.

The video sounded great (David Blatner is a genius!) until he got to the part about having to disassociate the frames containing the numbers from the Master. As Eugene points out, it's a rock or a hard place deciding whether to override all master page items globally to make this work or to go in page after page to unlock each frame containing the numbers. I still hold out hope that there is a script out there.
