I hope this screenshot captures everything. I have a single layer in my document, and I'm attempting to edit the A Master page, from Layout>Margins and Columns. The number of columns is greyed out. I can change the gutter, but not the number of columns. Can you help me understand what is going on?

It appears blank, but not greyed out. This will be the case if you have both pages of Master A selected, and the pages have different column counts.
You should be able to type a number in, and it will change the column count for both pages. alternatively, you could select just the one page of the spread to change only its column count.
