I've moved this from the poorly named Community Help forum (which is the forum for issues using the forums) to the InDesign forum so that proper help can be offered.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for reaching out. Would you mind sharing some more information like:

1. Version od OS and InDesign.

2. Is it happening while you work on a specific document or all?
3. Do you save files locally or on a server?
4. Have you tried resetting the preferences? If not, please try doing that. Follow instructions on help article

 https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/setting-preferences.html

**Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings and InDesign will launch with default settings. You can also take a backup of the folders in case you want to. Location is mentioned in the article.

This information will help us understand your issue better and work accordingly. Looking forward to your response.

Regards,

Ashutosh

There is a very big difference between a program (such as InDesign) “crashing” versus “shutting down” your computer!!!

If you have a situation in which not only does InDesign stop running, but your system either shuts down or reboots, it is indicative of either an internal operating system error, device driver error, or even a hardware error. Applications such as InDesign do not have access to protected operating system and hardware facilities such that they can “shut down” your system.

Please check to ascertain that you have all MacOS updates installed and that any non-Apple device drivers are updated to their most recent versions. You might also need to run hardware diagnostics on your system to ascertain that spurious hardware errors are not shutting down your system.
