window not coming up when trying to save

I am unable to save my indesign file as when I press 'save as' the window doesnt pop up. I even attempted to just 'save' it, but it has not saved the document ANYWHERE on my computer. I honestly dont know what to do? also my boyfriend tried to fix it by opening a bunch of windows and it is now frozen on the Preferences menu.

I had this issue while teaching InDesign last week, and it resolved itself after rebuilding preferences.

Note that this will require that you close the file, and InDesign.
