P: Panels and filmstrip black when switching to Develop

Not sure if this is the right place for a bug report, if not could anyone direct me to the right place please.

Clicking develop module at top right from the Library module opens the photo with film strip and both side bars black empty spaces. Initial few times I had to quit and restart Lightroom but then discovered switching to grid view again and develop keyboard short cut, everything comes back.

Hi all,

As Simon and Jeff have already mentioned in this thread, please make sure your macOS is updated to at least macOS Sierra 10.12 and at least Lightroom Classic 7.0 or Lightroom 6.13.

The best combo to avoid this issue is being on macOS High Sierra 10.13 and Lightroom Classic 7.1 or Lightroom 6.13.

The team has worked pretty hard with Apple to get this issue to stop appearing with macOS Sierra 10.12 and macOS High Sierra 10.13. Improvements were made in 10.12 and iterated upon for 10.13.

Hi Steve,

As noted before, this is a bug introduced at the macOS level. Through collaboration with Apple, they have made a fix in the later version of the macOS update. So the right thing to do is to update to the more recent version of macOS when possible.

Having said that, Lr team have done our best to workaround this issue for the cases that we can reproduce for macOS 10.11.6. But there is a limit can Lr can do.

Hope you understand the situation.

This should now work correctly in Lightroom CC2015.10/6.10 or later on macOS Sierra (10.12) or later. Don't hesitate to let us know if you see the issue again on the current macOS, and if you do, what triggers it.  Please update your system and let us know if you have any additional issues.

Additional information on this update can be found here: http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2017/04/lightroom-cc-2015-10-now-available.html

I'm not able to reproduce this issue. Have you tried restarting the computer after the update to Sierra? It may help if we could see your Lightroom System Info. Launch Lightroom, and select Help > System Info... and copy/paste the text in a reply.

I can reproduce it again and again. Here is the Help>system info.
Use graphics processor has been disabled as there was a conflict between Yosemite and my particular iMac's AMD video card with Lightroom.
I did restart, I will do so again.
Not sure if I should reinstall Lightroom after the Sierra install, maybe if nothing else helps?

Thanks Jeffrey.
I quit all apps and restarted the iMac and Lightroom, it seem to have sorted it. The panels' control sliders and the filmstrip thumbnails are back in develop module.

I am seeing this with LRCC2015.8 too.  I am forced to restart LR to get my side panels back.  It seems to happen when the app is in Develop as a background task  for a long period of tim (for me it was overnight)   I suspect a memory leak.   When I return to LR I fin the side panels missing.  Using the keyboard to switch modules does not refresh the side panels (even though the side panels are different panels for the left and right panels.

Occasionally, for some reason I haven't been able to figure out and
therefore can't reliably replicate, all of Lightroom's user interface panes except the center one disappear.  Some input of mine obviously is causing this; it doesn't happen spontaneously.  I haven't inadvertently set the application into Lights Out mode or hidden one or more of the control panels: it's just that everything is blacked-out except the center of the display.  I am unable to escape from this funny state using any of the interface-recovery methods I'm familiar with.  The only way I've found to restore the display to its normal state is to kill and relaunch the Lightroom process.  Bug?  Cockpit error on my part?

have i found a bug in 2015.2 ? i’ve been working in the print module and every time i hit the print button the whole background and side panels black out completely...the one workaround i
have found is by minimizing the window and then bringing it back again – hardly high tech ! any other reports of anything similar ?
later on - this bug is now happening all the time , ie whenever i click to change eg from one module to another.

This intermittent issue has been confirmed by the Lightroom QE team.

To workaround this issue, hit Cmd + H to hide Lightroom and Cmd + Tab to bring it back.

If you're hitting this often, you can roll back to a prior update. Instructions are here https://www.lightroomqueen.com/roll-back-update-previous/

But before you do, if you are seeing this consistently, and if you are using GPU acceleration (Preferences>Performance>Use Graphics Processor), you might try disabling it and see if the problem resolves.  Just a hunch, but I don't ever experience this behavior on my MacBook Air, where I haven't enabled GPU acceleration, and I see it frequently but intermittently and unpredictably on my Mac Pro, where I do use the GPU.  My gut tells me there might be some sort of race condition developing between threads running on two different processors that are responsible for painting the screen.  (This is purely a WAG: I have no knowledge of Lightroom's internals.)

macOSX 10.12.1, LR CC2015.8 french language.

Same problem randomly, it seems to me that this problem is produced if LR in window covering all the screen, left idle for more than 15 minutes, when we want to re-open LR full screen or you want to change the module, for example from library development.  It is not systematic, but it happened several times.

⌘ Tab normally clears all panels and repeating restores them. I am seeing regular issues where the Side panels are not restored, leaving blank, black spaces on either side of the image.

Now I have a situation where the interface has simply frozen. Clicking thumbs produces no change, neither does hitting G / E keys in Library module. Second force quit of the day

I have been using the app all day and seen numerous minor interface issues.

Last week, before update, I ran a week-long LR workshop with zero issues.

Yes, at least in my experience, but not for long.  The peripheral panes soon black out again in apparent response to subsequent user input.  I haven't taken the time to try methodically to discover a pattern, but my impression is that changing mode from e.g., Library to Develop is very likely to provoke them to go black again while user input within the same mode is less likely to do so.  In any event, the blackout typically recurs within a minute or two after minimizing and restoring.  The fix typically is more persistent when you kill and restart the LR process.  After doing that, I can often work for an hour or more before experiencing this phenomenon, even when cycling among different modes.  So it seems that minimizing and restoring the LR window provokes a temporary restoration of the visibility of the panes along the periphery, but doesn't correct the funny state within LR that caused the blackout in the first place.

By the way, I have never seen this condition occur spontaneously.  In other words, the panes have never blacked out except when I was using the keyboard and mouse.  So it seems as though there is some sort of pathological interaction between a thread that is involved in processing user input and one that is responsible for painting the screen.

Sometimes, but it happens again straight away, necessitating a restart. I'm quite sure an update is needed, between this and the loss of GPU support for many macs, I don't really know what you are doing at Adobe with LR.
