P: AI Masks Require updating and/or disappear

Community Beginner ,
May 29, 2025 May 29, 2025

Hello,

I recently had a call with Adobe support with no luck. I have found some threads on this but nothing presents a solution and it seems hard to find what the actual issue is.

If I edit a client gallery and use any healing brush tool or AI masking tool, the mask or healing brush/generative AI will get a red dot underneath after going back to the start of the gallery, my AI edits are gone....

I also noticed this happens 100% of the time when I quite and reopen lightroom, I can fix the mask, update ai settings but it just resets each time I open lightroom.

We tested a new catalogue, we tested a bunch of things with no luck.

We really need a fix on this Adobe it is killing workflow, not sure what broke this setting. I can't revert to an old version because I have lots of photos (I do 1 catalogue per year) and can't go back weeks of client work.

Also this catalogue was started at the begining of 2025 so there is no version 13 of this catalogue to revert to and test.

PLEASE HELP ADOBE!

For those in need of a temporary solution :

This workaround has helped:

Lightroom Classic stores AI masks in a file called Catalogname.lrcat-data. Sometimes, that file can get corrupted or have incorrect settings, which causes the masks to keep needing updates.

To test this:

1. Move that file out of your catalog folder.

2. Open Lightroom Classic, you’ll see a message about the missing data file.

3. Click Continue, and Lightroom will create a fresh version of it.

4. Then try updating one of your masks

Hi @bruno_3735! Thank you for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this behavior from LrC. Could you also tell us when you first noticed this issue, perhaps after an update to LrC or your operating system? To investigate this issue further, could you please provide a screen recording or relevant screenshots of the problem? You can share your response via Google Drive, WeTransfer, or another public file-sharing platform.

For a quick fix, try resetting your preferences. Try the Manual method (2) from this HelpX article: How to reset Lightroom Classic preferences.

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

message :
Échec de l'initialisation de stockage de l'IA
Et Lightroom C disparait

Hi @bruno_3735, thanks for reaching out!
It looks like the error might be related to your catalog. Here’s something you can try:

Move the .lrcat file to a separate, non-cloud folder and double-click it.
You’ll see an error about missing previews, just click Continue. Lightroom will create fresh support files.
Close Lightroom Classic. Then delete all files in your original folder except, if you’d like, the Previews and Smart Previews.
Finally, move the .lrcat file and the newly generated files back into your original Lightroom folder.

After that, everything should work normally.
Just a quick note: deleting the .lrcat-data file (which these steps do) will regenerate new Generative AI Remove variants, and the original ones can’t be recovered.
Let us know if this helps!
Alek

On Windows PC this issue is still not fixed. I mainly have this issue with Generative AI Remove and Sky Masks. I have to completely remake these edits when I go back to look at the ARW file again. Other AI edits such as Denoise need to regenerate but are not broken per se, it is just frustrating to need to wait for LrC to regenerate these edits every time I go to these images. Total nightmare for workflow and batch processing. Please fix this ASAP!

4. Then try updating one of your masks and see if it sticks.

If it works, you’ll need to update all your masks again, but hopefully just this one last time.

LRc 15.01 Win 11
Seriously fedup now with this denoise issue. The help files note the sequence should be to apply denoise first, however whichever way i do this I need to update denoise constantly.
Just testing I import a AWR raw image, develop and apply denoise, NOTHING ELSE!
I exit LR and restart, check the image and it says it needs to updae... This is ridiculous !!
Help pls.....

There's another big thread on this issue, which you should search for. I don't know what the solution is. Perhaps you need to unzip and use a recent backup of your catalog file.

Thank you for your reply. The problem occurred on my iMac after I copied my Lightroom folder of images and catalog to it from my Mac Studio. After trying several things (such as uninstalling and reinstalling LR) without success, I finally tried copying my entire “Photos” folder, which included other random photos in addition to the Lightroom folder. To my surprise everything is now working. I have no idea why this worked when nothing else did, but I won’t complain.

Hi @marcinw82378990, welcome to the community!
Could you share a few more details about the issue, like which version of Lightroom you’re using? You posted on the Lightroom Cloud board, but If you’re on Lightroom Classic, the problem might be related to your catalog.
You can check out this thread for more information:

Thanks so much!

Did you try opening a recent unzipped backup of your catalog?

LATEST

The same for me, since about a month ago this issue started. I even tried rebuilding the catalogu, but all the files with any generative masks or denoise now get a black exclamation mark "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo" and you cannot even bloody edit it now. Dunno what Adobe messed up but they should fix it really fast. If I try new edits, none of the mentioned ones sticks. Also tried synchronizing the folders, but nothing helps. Really angry with the product now.

Win 11, LrC 15.1, the latest build.
