P: Can I Use the Large Embedded Previews Created By Sony A1

I am trying to use the embedded previews from my Sony A1 raw files.  I know they're there because I can open them with Photo Mechanic.  But when I use embedded previews on import the previews I get are nowhere near full size.

Does anyone know how to work around this, or is Adobe working on a fix?

Greetings,

The Max 2021 Photography products updates have been released and include remedies for this topic.  The updates will be rolling out worldwide, October 26 and 27, 2021. If you do not see the updates in your Creative Cloud Desktop app, you can refresh the apps to see if the updates are available in your region.  The keyboard shortcut to refresh is [Cmd/Ctrl] + [Opt/Alt] + [ R ].

Note: iOS and Android updates may take up to a week to appear in your App Store.

Thank you for your pat

TBMK The Embedded (camera) Previews only remain until such time as you Zoom ( 1:1 ?)  or enter the Develop module. Then LrC builds its own previews. The size of the (LrC) previews should be determined by your options in Catalog Settings.

Check your settings-

Someone else observed this a few months ago:

https://lightroomqueen.com/community/threads/sony-a1-support.42388/

The Sony A1 and Nikon Z 7 store two different sizes of embedded JPEG previews in their raws.  LR uses the larger preview for the Z 7 but the smaller for the A1.  It's a bug.

That person never filed a bug report. But your post here will constitute an official bug report (once the moderators move it into the Bugs subforum).

Maybe I'm missing something. But when I go to Import files taken by the Sony A1, I'm still getting the smaller jpeg preveiw. It's still not using the full size that the A1 embedds into the RAW file.

I have changed settings as some users have suggested, but don't see a change.

I'm not observing that in my LR 11. I downloaded a sample Sony A1 raw and imported it, with the import option Build Previews: Embedded & Sidecar. When I then look at the imported photo in Loupe, it appears to be using the higher-resolution preview:

Troubleshooting steps:

1. Do the menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste here the first ten lines so we can see exactly which versions you're running.

2. In the Import window, what setting are you using for File Handling > Build Previews?

3. After importing a fresh raw from the camera, go to Library and enter Loupe view (E).  Post a screenshot of your entire LR window (as shown above).
