P: Locate folder > Error is displayed when tried to relink the folder present on NAS

Community Beginner ,
Jan 20, 2025 Jan 20, 2025

Started on a Mac all was fine.  Moved to my Windows laptop.  My pics are on a NAS.  Did a find missing folder and it found the folder find on the PC.  I have upgraded my Mac so I want to move back.  No issues moving over the catalogs and starting the app.  The NAS folder was available and mounted under the Network prior to starting Lightroom Classic.  Had no problems navigating with the folders prior to starting.  Of course LR classic no longer knew where the mounted folder was so I when in did find missing folder.  I was able to navigate to the folder on the mac.  However when I selected the folder on the Mac, I am getting "An internal error has occurred.  invalid path" error.  Even thought I had no issues navigating to the folder...  So, now I have thousand of photos I cannot get to inside LR Classic, but no problems getting to under the Mac...  version is 14.1.1.

The team is working on a way to ease this type of transition. Moving into bugs.

Hey @jspoon!

You mentioned the photos are stored on a NAS, but where is the catalog file located? If you haven't already, you might want to try resetting your Lightroom Classic preferences. Here's a guide on how to do that: https://adobe.ly/42snUuP

Another thing we can try is mapping the NAS shared folder with your images to a drive letter in Windows' File Explorer. Then, you can direct Lightroom's catalog in Windows to the images via the mapped drive letter.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Alek

thank you for the update...  The catalog is stored in the Mac filesystem (was previously on the Windows filesystem).  I will check out the resetting of the preferences.  This issue occurred moving from Windows to Mac, so I do not believe mapping is an option,

I did try one other thing on the Mac, I attempted to add a new folder and it had no issues with the same folder name and started searching for photos, but it was going to import them so I cancelled it.  So going to the same folder to import works fine, but finding a missing folder for that same folder does not work.  Thank again for the info.

Hey @jspoon!

Can you make sure Lightroom Classic has full access to your Mac's files? Since macOS 10.14 (Mojave), Apple introduced a new privacy structure to ensure that all applications obtain user consent before accessing documents, downloads, desktop, and network volumes. This might affect file finding. You can check how to do that here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/quick-tips-how-to-give-full-disk-access...

If that doesn't help, some users who switched from PC to Mac and had similar issues found that they had to open the catalog on a Windows machine, map the network share to a drive letter, and update it in Lightroom. Then, they saved it back to the Mac, reopened the catalog, and were able to update the folder location.

Hope this helps!

Thanks!

Alek

I am experiencing the same issue. Moved from PC to Mac. Photos stored on NAS, catalog stored on Mac. I cannot go back to the PC and make changes as that machine is no longer available. Did I just lose my edits on 30k photos?

The NAS is connected, I have granted all permissions, yet I'm still getting the Invalid Path error.

Is this a Mac problem or an Adobe problem? How can I fix it?

Hey @69832146! Welcome to the community!

To help narrow down the issue, can you let me know if you've tried any of the solutions I mentioned earlier in the thread?

Thanks!

Alek

I managed to get it work by borrowing a PC, transferring my Mac catalog back to the PC, remapping the network drive, transferring it back to the Mac, and then finally the "locate this folder" option worked. That is a ridiculous solution. In the hours it took to accomplish all that, I had plenty of time to investigate Lightroom alternatives and I think I'll give them a try. I don't care about LR AI features, but it sure would be nice if an issue that has persisted for many years would be fixed.

Thank you for sharing that progress.  my catalog is still on my PC as well, but my NAS no longer shows up under Network on my PC, not sure why that is but that means I cannot currently map it to a drive...  Need to work that out first.

Hi @jspoon @69832146! 😊

I totally understand your frustrations, and I'm sorry that the current workaround isn't the easiest. But it's great to hear it's working again for at least one of you!

@jspoon, for the NAS issue, I recommend reaching out to the manufacturer if you haven't already. You might need to tweak some settings to get your NAS recognized by your PC again. Please let me know if you're able to get it to work, and if you try the solution of mapping it to a drive.

Thank you so much! Alek

I am not sure I understand how mapping the NAS to a drive on my PC will help.  The problem is on my MAC.

I have verfied there is no access issue as I can import from the NAS if I create a new folder.  The mount points for the NAS are different between the PC and the MAC.  I believe the info about where the mount point is stored in the folder attributes, and when moved to the MAC it is still pointing to the PC mount point.  So, I have no issue navigating to the directory, but when I try to update the location of fails because the mount point for the NAS stored in the folder is wrong.

I'm having the exact same issue only my old Windows machine is gone and I don't have an option to go back and change the directory on the Windows side. I've tried everything else I've found on these forums going back to mid 2023 when people started reporting this. Most recently I've right clicked on a folder to try and work up the chain by 'finding parent' but the only option I have is to locate the missing folder and that just leads to 'invalid path'. I've also gone to Mac Settings and gave system wide disk acess to LRC.

I'm flat out stuck. I can't get to any of pictures. I don't understand why Adobe doesn't say there is a bug and fix this. The same thing happening to many, many people in the same situation.

Apparently from what I've been able to read if on the Windows side you have a server reference you are going to have this problem but if you have a drive letter specified to a local drive on the Windows side then LRC can handle it on the Mac side. People have gotten out of this by taking their catalog back to Windows, firing up LRC and replacing all NAS references to a local drive (not move any files, just point as if they were there). Move that catalog back over to Mac and LRC with be able to deal with it.

Unfortunately my Windows machine is gone. I don't have that option.

I was able to get this working but it was very painful...  Adobe did not help and said I would have to create a new catalog and re-edit and tag 30K pictures...  First I copied my files from my nas to a harddrive and tried to find missing pictures on the local drive and it still did not solve the problem.  The issue seemed to be residual data from the PC so it could not change the root of the folder.  I discovered I could find missing photos on the harddrive but not the upper folder.  The good news is that if you find a missing photo, it would pull in all the photos in the directory and all subdirectories.  However, it would start a directory at that level.  So you will loose the directory structure you had before...  For example, if you have travel and the two subdirectories france and italy and no individal picture under france, just the directories.  I went into france which had pics and did a find on one of the folders.  I created a france folder at the root level.  Then I went to italy and did a find and it created an italy directory.  The good new if found all the files under each directory.  But the travel folder was lost.  I would recommend not moving or adding folders until you have found all your pics on the hard drive.  I hope that is clear and helps someone...
