P: (Mac) People masks selections are not as expected (Entire Screen or Square Area)

This was originally posted under "Bugs" but I really want this to be answered as a question. I will be happy to delete whichever post doesn't fit under the best category however! Thank you.

When using Lightroom Classic 12.2.1 with MacOS Ventura 13.3 (on a Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020 iMac with the AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16 GB and 72 GB of memory)...

I am getting the entire image selected when I try to use the "Select People" then choosing "Entire Person." Lightroom Classic allows me to individually select the hair, teeth, eyes, etc. as usual but when trying to select the entire body, the whole screen gets turned pink to indicate that the Lightroom thinks that the whole picture is the person.

I've attached two (redacted for privacy) screenshots of the "Subject" masking that still works as it should and the "Entire Person" mask that shows where the entire photo area has been selected incorrectly by the AI.

Anybody have any thoughts? Thanks!

I don’t think calling it a blanket Intel thing is technically accurate though. I have a 2008-ish MacBook that runs on an Intel processor that I haven’t updated the oS on (still running on Sur) and all the masking works perfectly on that. This all started when I updated to the current oS (can’t think of the name at the moment and I’m on my phone) on my 2020 iMac. I DO think there’s an Intel component but everyone I have seen comment details has said it’s a 2020 or later Intel thing. I know that doesn’t solve the problem but I think it’s important to be as specific as possible cause they’re clearly stumped.

"there is STILL a bug with Lightroom Classic masking if you're using an Intel Mac."

All the reports about Macs in this thread are for the AMD 5700 graphics processors. I just tested LR 12.3 and 12.5 on my old Macbook Pro (2019, 15", Intel Core i9, AMD Radeon Pro Vega 20 4 GB, Mac OS 13.2.1), and People masking works correctly.

Given the lack of similar reports here about Intel Macs with other graphics processors, it's likely the problem is a bug in the RX 5700 driver.  It's a four-year-old chip, and though AMD hasn't officially moved it to "legacy support", they may not be paying much attention to driver bugs for older chips.

From my POV it's a shame. 😞 This problem affects all users with an iMac 202X and the AMD Radeon 5700 (Pro/XT) card and still nothing happens. For how long do we have to wait until this bug is solved, Adobe?

I'm changing my GPU to a 6800xt this evening in the hopes it fixes it. Thankfully I am able to do that, I know some people can't. Might be worth a try for an egpu?

"how can we report this to Adobe?"

This thread is the official bug report, which Adobe has acknowledged and is tracking internally:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-mac-people-masks-selections-are-not-as-expec...

Unfortunately, Adobe rarely comments on when or if bugs might be fixed. If the root cause of the problem described here is a bug in the Mac driver for the Radeon 5700 graphics processor, then Adobe has to wait for Radeon to fix it and then Apple to include the fix in Mac OS.

why with people mask options it will only select 1 person, which encompasses the whole group & not each individual?

Sorry but no. I'm honestly not even sure WHAT you are talking about as you have given almost no information but whatever it is, you are not on the right thread. This issue (that is VERY well detailed/documented here) has been going on since early April and the fix is not in our court it's somewhere in Adobe/Apple/Radeon's realm of responsibility.

This seems to be issue with my iMac Desktop. Screenshot of my system uploaded. My photos & catalog are stored on an Ext. HD. When in LR Develop Module, I can click on Masking wheel for a group photo & it will "process the people" for a few seconds. Then, it will only display "person 1", regardless of the number of people in the photo. (2nd Screenshot). When I click on that 1 circle, the enitre photo is shaded in red, or sometimes the whole group. It will NOT separate group photos into person 1, person 2, person 3, etc. I can take this same External HD, plug it into my MacBook Pro, open the same photo in LR there, click on the Masking wheel, let it process the people, & it WILL separate the group in to each individual (person 1, person 2, etc.) I am wondering if I have inadvertenly clicked on a setting that is causing this issue???

You've got an Imac with a Radeon Pro 5700, and others with that hardware report similar problems, unfortunately.  What I wrote in the main thread about this:

There is another option that Adobe has inexplicably refused to implement at trivial cost: Provide an option that would disable the use of the graphics processor for the AI commands. The AI masking would run about 3-4 times slower (e.g. 16 seconds instead of 4), but at least it would run correctly.

Thank you for shedding light on this issue. What remains puzzling is: 1. When the masking feature was first introduced several months ago, The feature DID work on this desktop. People were separated into individuals (out of the group) & I could do individual edits, as needed. The problem began with later update (s). 2. My MacBook Pro is an older device (2017) with older hardware, but yet the feature WILL work currently on that device. I realize they are different hardwares, but it just seems odd. I sure hope Apple will address & correct this issue very soon. When I purchased this desktop a few years ago, I got about as much power as I could at the time because I did want it to be able to handle big jobs for a good while. In fact, my Apple Care is still in effect, though expires in November. Thus, I am disappointed they have not created an update to fix this issue. Thanks again for this insight. It's about driven me crazy trying to figure out what I might have done with a setting that might have caused this.

Adobe is continually evolving the implementation of AI masking, and it's very possible that the most recent releases of LR are tripping over driver bugs in ways that previous releases of LR didn't.  Apps like LR executing AI models exercise graphics processors (and their drivers) in much different ways than more traditional apps like games and video, and you can see over the past couple years how many people report here that updating their graphics drivers corrects problems with LR.  The manufacturers are in a continual process of improvement and bug-elimination with their drivers, as evidenced by their frequent releases of new drivers.

There are, but unlike PC we can't go in and update ourselves. We have to wait for apple to put the updates in an os update

I have just chatted with Apple Support, who referred me to the feedback support section & I sent a request for them to PLEASE address this issue! I asked if Apple keeps communication lines open with the manufactuers of their computer components, but did not get a clear answer. It would surely seem that they would, in order to keep customers happy. I have spent too much time fooling with this & trying to figure this out, as thought I had changed a setting or something. When it first came out, it would separate people, but the software updates & apparently the driver no longer "gee haw" or "get along together". Wish they would get on this!

Even on a hackintosh I am unable to update my driver as far as I know. I haven't checked but I will later this week to be sure but apple really hinders their own users way too often

Buenos días:

he instalado Lightroom Classic en mi ordenador y las mácasas de cielo y personas no funcionan bien. Con el de cielo me dice siempre que no detecta ningún cielo y con el de personas selecciona siempre un rectángulo, no la cara:

@Luis31972729l9jm, please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.
