P: (Mac) People masks selections are not as expected (Entire Screen or Square Area)

This was originally posted under "Bugs" but I really want this to be answered as a question. I will be happy to delete whichever post doesn't fit under the best category however! Thank you.

When using Lightroom Classic 12.2.1 with MacOS Ventura 13.3 (on a Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020 iMac with the AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16 GB and 72 GB of memory)...

I am getting the entire image selected when I try to use the "Select People" then choosing "Entire Person." Lightroom Classic allows me to individually select the hair, teeth, eyes, etc. as usual but when trying to select the entire body, the whole screen gets turned pink to indicate that the Lightroom thinks that the whole picture is the person.

I've attached two (redacted for privacy) screenshots of the "Subject" masking that still works as it should and the "Entire Person" mask that shows where the entire photo area has been selected incorrectly by the AI.

Anybody have any thoughts? Thanks!

Ventura 13.5.2 updated graphics and audio drivers! Masking is working again for me! How about you?

In theory it would just make the masking AI use the processor power instead of graphics power, could slightly slow down performance.

Disabling the use of the graphics processor for AI masking will cause LR to run the AI algorithms on the main CPU rather than the GPU.  The Mac AI framework will ensure that the AI models produce the exact same results regardless.

My testing shows that AI masking runs about 4-5 times slower on the CPU than on a newer GPU. On an older less-capable GPU, the slowth could be less.

So essentially what everyone was asking for before to be implemented?

@SweetPeaPhotog  haha sounds like the solution I sure could've used from 4/5 through 9/14.

@John R Ellis The issue is back AGAIN... and the workaround isnt working anymore. No people can be identified and masking in general just closes the whole program. You have been FAR more helpful than any Adobe employee has so I figured I would check with your first... any advice.

I have tried reverting to previous versions and nothing is working. This all comes after have issues editing jpegs in PhotoShop a few days back where the images literally were not even showing up at all. That issue was fixed by dialing my version of PhotoShop back 1 version... I finished the gallery I was working on in PS and now I am back in ACR working on the next batch of RAW files and having this masking issue. (Tested it in LRC also and same issue as in ACR)

@michelegranja, my only suggestion is to triple check that you've set Preferences > Performance > Use Grqphics Processor to Off and you've disabled LR's use of the GPU for AI masking:

https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/acr-gpu-faq.html#lens-blur

I haven't seen any other reliable workarounds posted, unfortunately.

@John R Ellis I use ACR exclusively... I only test issues in LRC before coming to this forum to post to make sure they replicate there... I've done both things you mentioned (which worked wonderfully last time) and they are not working. It's maddening because I was able to remove the disable GPU file for over a month with no issues. It's just one thing after another.

Thank you for your responses always.

I love that they have things working and then suddenly they decide "let's take this away again" and we are just screwed

@SweetPeaPhotog The level of anxiety it causes me is off the charts. I totally get bugs when new features are added - I really do... but it has been non-stop MAJOR issues since last April. Like, I don't need all the stupid AI features that will create a false reality - I just want to be able to apply local adjustments via masking to RAW files and open jpegs that I can actually see the image and not just a gray screen. Seems reasonable, right?!

I caved in and bought an Apple Silicon Mac. Now the AI selection works like butter. AMD GPU's on Mac are pathetic. Neither company cares to keep drivers updated. Avoid buying an old Intel mac if you are a professional from this day forward.

Okay congratulations Some of us have computers that are only one year old that we can't use anymore so I'm not going to drop 1K plus on a computer when I just bought a new one two years ago

@stunamii Yeah, thanks... I never bought an old Intel Mac - I dropped $5,200 on a brand new iMac in 2020. We came here looking for ACTUAL advice.

Agreed, telling someone to upgrade to a newer item because the manufacturer is purposely doing this is INSANE.

I was not insinuating you or anyone bought an old mac. I too bought my iMac
2020 in 2020. Which is why I said "from this day forward"

But telling someone that spent 5k on a computer in 2020 that they should just upgrade is insane. That's like telling someone to buy a whole new car when the battery dies. We shouldn't be forced to upgrade just to use a program we already pay for.

Hi folks,
sorry but I don't get it -> on my 5K iMac (2020) the people masking works as designed after I installed MacOS Ventura mid of september 2023. I checked the people masking a few minutes ago and there are no bugs here (see attached pic). LR is forced to use the GPU (AMD Radeon Pro 5700XT) acceleration to max. @Andreas29710925mack I'm really happy for you.   And I don't get it - Did you come here to tell us we are lying? My people masking shuts down the program. Period. Yours still working is not a solution to my problem. Thanks, though.

@michelegranja ... be polite and not arrogant. The reason why I posted my experience was to show, that not all systems are affected. And guess what - now you updated your system and you are a happy cookie again.

@Andreas29710925mack  We are all very aware not all systems are impacted... we don't need to hear from everyone out there getting to do their work successfully. Your advice about arrogance is laughable based on your responses - I’m not a cookie... and having been dealing with varying levels of this issue since last April, I don't appreciate you downplaying it as you have. Just more unnecessary input.
