P: Secondary display does not render adjustment brushes properly all the time

When working in the Develop module on adjustment brushes, and ONLY with the mask overlay on, the secondary display sometimes does not show the effect. (Toggling the overlay can also cause the brush's effects to not be visible on the secondary display as well.)

I've been working with a lot of images that need corrected exposure. I've adjusted most of my images down about -0.38. When I paint that as an initial brushstroke, the secondary display shows my changes, but adding additional brush strokes, (again, only with the overlay mask on in the develop module on the primary display,) causes the secondary display to brighten or darken on the areas affected by the brush.

I've since noticed that any effect, even with a static exposure will cause the phenomenon of the brush either brightening on the secondary display, or darkening.

You can add a stroke: exposure goes bright. Add another stroke (doesn't matter where, the bright/dark effect occurs brush-wide), and the image goes dark to reflect the proper setting. Add another stroke again, back to bright.

This occurs:

• Only when the overlay mask is on in the Develop module in the primary display
•  
• With or without Open GL enabled. I've tried both.
•  
• In Windows 7x64 and Windows 8x64, I've tried both. (Just upgraded actually, problem was occurring in Win 7 too.
•  
• On my XFX Radeon 5870, 16 GB RAM, Intel Core i7 2600K system
•  
• Before or after optimizing the catalog, not that that would matter
•  
• With any effect at all. Exposure, saturation, clarity, combinations, singularly, anything at all.
•  
• Even from merely the toggling the overlay mask.
•

I cannot reproduce it, but I see other bugs with the preview system.

Chris, does only happen to the second monitor preview, or to other places where previews are used (filmstrip, navigator)?

Are you able to reproduce it consistently?

Does it happen if you bring the second monitor window onto the first monitor?

So a few things of note:

1) If I expand the filmstrip to be *larger* (as tall as it allows), the problem stops being reproducible. Dragging the filmstrip back to be smaller (vertically, just barely under the "maximum" causes the problem to re-present itself.

2) Dragging the secondary display onto the primary monitor doesn't change its behavior.

3) The overlay mask appears on the secondary display some of the time. This is particularly distracting, but only seems to happen if I had the image zoomed when I toggled it.

4) The overlay mask will also randomly choose to appear on the Navigator and/or Filmstrip, seemingly at random. For instance: I browse to a photo. I click an existing pin. I hit O. The mask appears on the filmstrip and develop module's main workspace. If I zoom in to the image on the secondary, it appears there as well.

It's essentially a complete crap-shoot if the overlay mask will appear in either of those four places: navigator sometimes shows it, filmstrip sometimes shows it, secondary usually only shows it after zoom activity with it already on.

Yes, I can reproduce it. Ironically, I canNOT reproduce this on portrait-oriented photos, but that's okay because portrait photos are plagued by their own special little bug of being blurry in the develop module. Not sure if they're related.

Try to make sure you test on a landscape-oriented photo.

If it depends on preview sizes, it may be because of my screen resolution that I cannot reproduce. What is your screen resolution?

Did you check out 4,3 to see if it's been fixed?

At least the overlay mask in navigator and filmstrip is not being shown anymore.

It doesn't appear to be as severe, but I can still get it to apparently "deactivate" the brush momentarily:

Draw adjustment brush with mask on.
Press O to turn off mask.
Add to the brush by drawing again.
Press O again to turn mask back on.
Observe the mask's effects "disappear" on the secondary display, as if you've deleted the brush.
Draw again, entire brush effect reappears.

Thinking this isn't fully solved yet...
