P: Unable to advance to the next photo

Why no one writes about the fact that in develop mode, after any manipulation with a photo, it is impossible to go to the next photo in the feed? You go, but the photo remains the same as it was, you have to go back and only then go to the next photo. This is a global problem!!  Anyway, I did some research and I realized why many people are silent about it, because this problem occurs only when using the +\- buttons on any keyboard, even on macbook !!!!. If you use only mouse or touchpad, there is no problem with photo transition. That's why many photographers don't pay attention to it, because they don't use the keyboard. Therefore, ADOBE does not react in any way.

@johnrellis , " That's a good hypothesis. But I'm able to reproduce the bug easily without Automatically Write Changes Into XMP enabled."

I do not save metadata to the file manually or automatically and do not experience the issues in this thread on my wife's windows laptop LrC 13.0.1 with Win 11.

Just an update - I am noticing that this bug, while very present and very annoying and workflow-interrupting, is FAR worse with jpg files. I'm just trying to quickly run through 2MB (JUST TWO MB!) preview files for a client and almost every single one hangs on the prior photo, and when I do left arrow, right arrow, go to crop, it starts cropping the prior photo. Seriously what the actual is going on? I even reached out to help test and no response. Incredibly frustrated. Like this task should take 5 minutes. Bug has been present and widespread and widely reported for a month.

Sorry, I just have to add that often it also starts editing the prior file - like one photo is displayed, I change the exposure, nothing happens, I do left arrow to "reset" around the bug and see that my adjustment was applied to the prior image. This is ridiculous.

Aaaan now Lightroom is completely frozen. On a TWO MB jpg file. On a new computer that I just bought because I thought the issue was that my computer was too old for the new version. I'm so done with LR right now. Unbelievable.

@Rikk Flohr: Photography:  "Radio Silence?  @Sameer K  Posted on this forum on October 18th that "The team is aware of this and is currently working on it. Until this morning, there had been no change in that status - at which point I posted."

Yes, mostly radio silence.  Sameer's post was on October 18.  His message was sparing.  Since then there have been hundreds of posts about this, including several asking for updates.  Almost three weeks later, your post provided the first indication that this bug is being taken this seriously.

Holy cow, THANK YOU. I have read through this entire thread and if that workaround was posted, I must have missed it. It seems to work for now. I really appreciate it!

I click the picture with the mouse. I have Logitech MX 3 with extra buttons, I bind "X" and "P" keys on the mouse buttons, so I pick/reject photos with the mouse buttons. And as I have a mouse in my hand anyway it is not a big deal for me to click the previous image. That might not be true for other people with their own habits.

Hi. First of all, I want to apologize for my bad english.

I'm getting very frustated. since the last upgrade of LRC (i dont know which version, but since the program ask to upgrade the catalog to a new version) I have a very bad bug. In the develop module, when I try to pass to the next photo (with the arrow key or with ctrl+arrow) the photo on the filmstrip change, but the photo shown doesn't.

I tried the same in 2 different computers, one is

AMD Ryzen 7 5800H

16gb ram

samsung 970 evo ssd

windows 11 64bits

geforce rtx 3070

I'm a wedding photographer so I have to edit A LOT of photos. A LOT

Hi Matias. Welcome to the party. To find the solution you will have to painstakingly search through all 12 pages of this thread for the correct workaround, or you will be chastised by the one or two users who posted a slightly-better-than-nothing-but-still-poor solution for not wasting your time combing through the dozens of non-working suggestions, including the one Adobe mistakenly highlighted as the "correct" one. Anyways, to save you some time, the current best workaround is to go into the library module and then enable Photo -> Auto Advance. You can now use the P key in the develop module to proceed to the next photo. Depending on your current workflow, this may be extremely disruptive, as it sets your current photo as a "pick," or it may work fine for the time being. I find it to be incredibly distruptive to my current workflow but nobody has suggested a better workaround so far. For whatever insane reason Adobe will not pin this single usable workaround, instead continuing to insist that the issue has something to do with Smart Previews, which, as has been noted six thousand times in this thread, is not the culprit.

Workarounds using Custom Mouse Button Actions

For Logitech Mouse Users: If you have a Logitech mouse with smart actions, here's a workaround I've been using. You can set up a keystroke for any custom button. Personally, I use the "next" button on my mouse to trigger a sequence of smart actions. Here’s how I do it:

  1. Assign the "next" button (or any other custom button) to a keystroke.
  2. Set up the keystroke to mimic the following sequence: Right key, Left key, Right key, with a 0.2s delay between each press.

CleanShot 2023-11-15 at 23.56.44.jpgexpand image

For Non-Logitech Mouse Users: Don't worry if you don't have a Logitech mouse! You can achieve similar functionality using software like "Better Touch Tool" or "Keyboard Maestro". Here's a quick guide:

  1. Install either "Better Touch Tool" or "Keyboard Maestro" on your system.
  2. Create a custom keystroke sequence similar to the one mentioned above for the Logitech mouse.
  3. Assign this keystroke to a preferred button or a keyboard shortcut.

These tools are incredibly versatile and can help you customize your workflow, regardless of the mouse or keyboard you use.

The workaround generates little delay, but it's more stable in my case.

Recently when I'm editing with Lightroom in the Develop mode I've noticed that using the keyboard arrows to advance to the next image isn't working properly. I have to right click my mouse a couple of times on the fringe area to get to the next frame with the keyboard arrow. This happens almost everytime I try to go to the next image. Very annoying and really slows the workflow down. I'm curious if anyone else is having this issue. Thanks for your comments.

Hey, Adobe...I can't believe this  bug is not still solved. After weeks of your users and customers complain here.
Shame on you. You are really unbelievable during those years I am a Lightroom users. So many problems, bugs, performance issues...even now in 2023 I can't tell that Lightroom is quick software....still when switching between library module and develop module is slow..waiting to retracing all the sliders, tables over and over again. I just don't understand how you work there. I can see you put some great features but if you can't solve the bone basics...what can I think about you?

And people think it's "normal" to keep using these workarounds with shortcuts to do something as simple as moving forward in the Develop mode. It's the most basic function. There's no way to work productively with version 13.01. Many of us are using 12.5. There isn't any new function in version 13 that justifies so many problems.

I can't find anything online about this issue. It's been going on for a while now, and I mean..a while! I've updated LRC and it still happens. I even updated my whole OS and it's still happening. It's getting so bad that I'm having to constantly switch between images just to get it to load a picture. The picture will load if I manually click the image in the "film strip" section but when editing as a professional, efficiency is key. It might not seem like a big deal to have to go back and click the picture but again, when you have 800+ wedding catalog and need to get it back to the photographer in a timely manner..those clicks add up.

Welcome to this thread.  To save you from sifting through everything, the lowdown is that there are hundreds of posts here by users frustrated and hindered by this bug, the issue is widespread and easily reproducible, yet it's been over a month and Adobe hasn't issued a fix.  Draw your own conclusions about whether Adobe is user-centric when they add advanced features but break very basic, core functionality that many of us rely on every day... and don't appear to make it a priority to fix the problem.

Given Adobe's lack of response to this "feature" that makes LrC difficult for us professional users...

I've resorted to making a macro shortcut on my programmable keyboard, when its in Lightroom, when I hit the next arrow key, it does the "right, left, right" with 50ms delay to get past the non-display "feature"....

Ridiculous.

Dear friends, ADOBE is currently working on fixing the bug and will soon have the expected update, so please wait a bit longer. On page 10, I described how to temporarily bypass this problem through CAPSLOCK, this solution works 100%, my processing speed has not slowed down. So just follow my advice and stop writing the same thing here. I understand that it is very annoying, but just wait.

Hi @Sameer K,
thanks for this workaround recommendation. It indeed helps here (13.0.1) but unfortunaltely still doesn't make sense cause it massively slows down the overall performance. If you have any other idea until the bug is fixed I would very much appreciate it.
Best,
Sebastian
