I use LR Classic 2019 for my photo and video archives.
My Sony RX100mk3 shoots hd video in the MTS format. Adobe says it supports the file format but the recent 2019 LR Classic update has been nothing but trouble. Originally it completely messed up the capture date of the MTS video files. I posted here about the issue and got no response (https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightroom-still-inconsistent-capture-date-tim...?). In a response to that issue I thought I could try creating a new catalog of the same files/folders. That actually created MORE problems because now all of the metatdata on all videos has been lost as well. And the capture date issue still persists.
So does ANYONE have any ideas about what the problem is? One thing I thought of is that since you can't technically write metadata to a video file maybe that info is stored elsewhere and was misplaced when I created the new catalog. When I look at the same video files in the old catalog the metadata is still there. (see screen shots below showing the old and new catalog displaying the metadata.RackMultipart20190211517461nd2-a3732bbd-9c0b-4fb5-96cd-7bbb0509b918-1138293379.pngRackMultipart201902117986217lu-bbd9c734-858c-41b7-aa09-57a82972bfa5-775575515.png
Could you share a video test file from your Sony RX100mk3?
Also, regarding your other issue regarding metadata lost, as you mentioned, metadata cannot be written to the video files. Also, an xmp sidecar cannot be created for the video files in Lightroom Classic. Thus when you create a new catalog and import the video files again, the existing metadata changes from old catalog would not come to the new catalog.
Sure. Below is a link to the video file. I'm also including a few screenshots of how the file looks in the old catalog (BigBrother), the new catalog (WOPR), Photoshop and the Finder. You can see that the only app not seeing the date info correctly is LR. On import I rename the files based on the capture time so it's YYYY_DDDD_. You can see when the file was shot based on the title. So with this file it was shot July 20, 2014. LR with the new catalog (WOPR) is seeing it as January 12, 2019. The old catalog (BigBrother) is seeing it as the original capture time. Photoshop and the finder are also seeing it correctly.
Also, when I created the new catalog LR changed the capture time a hundreds more MTS files so it seems it's something with LR and not the files since all the other apps are seeing the info correctly.
Another question, is there a way to migrate/blend the video metadata to the new catalog or do I need to use that catalog forever if I want to keep the video metadata?
Regarding the getting video metadata from old catalog, you could try this:
create a collection in the old catalog (BigBrother) for the video files you need the metadata
From the Right Click Context menu of the collection, export the collection as catalog (say VideoData). Make sure to uncheck "Export negative files", so that the videos are not copied again.
Open your new catalog (WOPR) and from the File menu select "Import from Another Catalog..."
Select the the exported catalog (VideoData) for import from Another Catalog. As the files are already present in the WOPR, you would see a similar dialog as below:
Under Change Existing Photos section, you can either choose to go with default option (shown in above screenshot) or you could select to replace only Metadata and develop settings.
Make sure to uncheck "Preserve old settings as a Virtual copy" so that you do not end up with virtual copies for all your videos
Once the catalog import is completed, you would get all your metadata from the old catalog to new.
Brian, the issue is present in PS as well. PS shows the file modified date as capture date. So, when I open the file you shared in PS and see the file info, I see today's date as capture time as that is the file modification date for the file on my system.
