In the past, this issue was due to an incompatibility between Lightroom Classic and some third party plug-ins. The usual supect being Logitechs 'Logi Options'.

If you're unsure whether you have above plug-in installed, then go to File > Plug-in Manager and look for Logi Options in the list. If you find it, click Disable in the Status panel on the right.

I believe the Smugmug plug-in is another potentional culprit. So, follow the same procedure as set out above.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs.

@fredandtam, in the Folders panel nested under Macintosh HD, do you see a folder "Volumes", under which is listed your external drives?  If so, please post a full-resolution screenshot (not a phone pic) of the Folders panel.

Several possibilities for everything being gray (navigator, Grid view, Filmstrip, histogram). Another members reply to a different posting reminds me of the following.

1. Corrupt Monitor Profile. see:

https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-change-my-monitor-profile-to-check-whether-its-corrupted/

Additional possibilities:

2. Bad GPU driver. Test this by turning off use GPU in preferences.

3. Corrupt preference file. See:

@fredandtam, you said "same issue", but your screenshot shows all the thumbnails as grey.  Are you also seeing the error message "?:0: attempt to index field 'rootFile' (a nil value)" when you try to delete photos (the original topic of this thread)?

For the grey thumbnails, two more troubleshooting steps in addition to those suggested by @GoldingD:

1. Ensure LR is granted Full Disk Access (not Files And Folders) permission:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/quick-tips-how-to-give-full-disk-access...

2.  See this help article:

Note that screenshot seems to be indicating that there is an ongoing sync from the Adobe Cloud. I'm not sure how or even if that would result in the error message, but I would pause the sync to see whether the error continues.

One more troubleshooting step: Roll back to LR 12.1.

Given that the obvious solutions seem to be failing, I'd be tempted to trash the Previews.lrdata files as it or one of it's components (i.e. pixels.db or root-pixels.db) may be corrupt.

This old thread from 2017 may also be worth checking out as relates to the same error message

"?:0: attempt to index field 'rootFile' (a nil value)"

"nil value" error messages arise from low-level programming errors that have many different causes.  Reviewing past threads, this particular variant doesn't appear to be associated with the Logioptions plugin, but you don't have that plugin installed in any case.

- This particular error was associated with the grey "ghost thumbnails" bug a year or two ago that corrupted catalogs, but your screenshot doesn't show them.

- A couple people reported that this error arose in years past when they problems with folder permissions, and that might be striking you. Something changed in Mac OS 12.3.1, and many people are finding they need to grant LR Full Disk Access. See:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/quick-tips-how-to-give-full-disk-access...

- If that doesn't help, one person reporting resetting permissions fixed the problem:

https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior. That article explains how to restore the old preferences if resetting doesn't help.
