I recenlty let creative cloud upgrad lightroom to release 12.5. Since then, clicking the masking tool freezes the system for about 90 seconds. I think it's trying to detect faces, but I'm not sure. Is there a way to turn the facial detection off?
I'm on Windows with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz processor, 32 GB of RAM and an Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti video care

Turning off 'People' detection in Masks isn't possible. However, you can toggle the exposure triangle to close the 'People' section of thae masks panel. Since the exposure triangle status is sticky you should find that it will be closed by deafult with subsequent images. You should also find that opening the masking panel is faster and less likely to cause freezes when the 'People' panel is closed.
Note that the usual reason for the issue you describle is insufficient dedicated GPU VRAM (minimum is 2GB) or outdated GPU drivers. The latest driver for your card should be available at below link.
