add to target collection: repeatable bug

A new bug that I've noticed recently, which is completely repeatable:
-- Create a new collection, and check "set as target collection"
-- Select a photo in library mode
-- Press "b" key
-- Nothing happens: no confirmation message and image is not added to target collection
-- Wait a few minutes and try again and message "removed from target collection" is displayed
-- Press "b" key again and it now works
Looks like a performance/asynchrony bug.
I have a nasty feeling this is happening because I recently moved all my images into a single catalog to overcome the metadata syncing bugs which made it impossible to maintain multiple catalogs reliably, and I naively assumed that catalogs with large numbers of images (mine has 86k) were still usable.

When I follow those steps in my LR 10.4 / Mac 11.3.1, it all works correctly.

Try resetting LR's preferences:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior. That article explains how to restore the old preferences if resetting doesn't help.

"I naively assumed that catalogs with large numbers of images (mine has 86k) were still usable."

86K images constitutes a medium-sized catalog. Many people have catalogs with hundreds of thousands of images. I think it's very unlikely that the size of your catalog is the cause of this buggy behavior.
