Adobe LR Classic CC; Keywords not loading

Community Beginner ,

Adobe LR Classic CC; Keywords are not loading in Library mode.

The keyword tags never load, it just says "working..." but nothing ever loads. If they do load it takes an unreasonably long time to load, over 15-30 minutes (or longer).

I have tried un-installing, re-installing, using the CC Cleaner App, installing the previous version of LR and coming back to the newest version. Nothing seems to work to get the keywords to load in a timely manner, or at all in some cases.

Has anyone else had this problem or figured out a fix to this issue?

Where precisely do you see "working..." on the screen?

I wonder if this is related to the number of keywords -- roughly how many do you have? (Hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands?)

It says "working..." under Keyword Tags, where I should the keywords for the selected image I'm looking at.

(Keywording > Keyword Tags)

The Keyword List shows all of my keywords

In the tens of thousands for number of keywords and 309,405 images in my catalog.

In the tens of thousands for number of keywords and 309,405 images in my catalog.

That's certainly at the high end for both. I haven't seen any other reports about this particular symptom, so I can only suggest some generic troubleshooting steps:

1. Reboot (just in case you haven't, but you probably have).

2. Reset LR's preferences: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/ . That magic fairy dust often fixes things when LR goes wonky.

3. Select all the photos and do File > Export As Catalog, unchecking all the options in the lower-left corner of the Export As Catalog window.  Open the exported catalog and see if it has the same problems.  I believe that exporting catalogs builds the internal database nearly from scratch, so it might have more effect than simply optimizing the catalog.

John, Thanks for the suggestions

1. We have tried rebooting numerous times. Didn't help.

2. We tried reseting LR's preferences earlier today using that exact article. Didn't help.

3. We tried exporting a small new catalog. Didn't work.

4. A new catalog doesn't have the problem, but a catalog exported from the existing main catalog does have the problem. Doesn't help.

5. Keywording seems to work on .psd & .jpg files; don't seem to work for some .CR2, .fff, .tiff, .NEF, etc

6. As a workaround, if you select Metadata > Save Metadata to File, then Metadata > Read Metadata from File, it will fix the keywords however this would require a massive amount of manual effort for the rest of our lives. This is perhaps a single image fix.

Please continue the discussion in the thread in the official Adobe feedback forum that was linked above a year ago: Lightroom Classic: Keywords not loading (SQL database issue) | Photoshop Family Customer Community. Adobe product developers read everything posted there but rarely participate here (a user-to-user forum).

Have you checked the catalog integrity?

At least one search on google for this indicates a SQL error (error in database) that may have occurred during a catalog upgrade.

You’ve posted to an ancient thread. It is highly unlikely that the issue described in this thread, though not impossible, is the same one you are currently experiencing. Rather than resurrect an old thread that is seemingly similar, you are better off posting to a new thread with fresh, complete information, including system information, a complete description of the problem, and step-by-step instructions for reproduction.

If the issue is the same, we will merge you back into the appropriate location.

Thank you!
