I have a older iMac from 2013, running Mojave which started slowing down to a crawl. I'm trying to get a final backup before it dies. I'm stuck on Checking integrity. I do have a backup from about a week ago. Any suggestions?

Ouch! Where is your previous back up? Hopefully on a separate drive? And you do mean a back up of the entire catalog?
If that is the case, you might try quitting or force quitting. THen launch and try to test integrity of the catalog again.
