Can't Edit Photos. Lightroom Keeps Freezing

Recently when editing photos in LR on my Macbook, I’m able to get through maybe 100 photos before everything just freezes up. The only way I can exit LR is by force quitting, but even then I’m still unable to eject my external hard drive from my laptop.

This has been happening on ~both~ of my Macbook pros (I don’t have a desktop) and I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. Is this a Lightroom issue or an external hard drive issue? And is there a workaround to this?

Lightroom is up to date but I haven’t switched over to Ventura yet. Any help would be soooo appreciated as I currently can't edit any photos.

Does the entire computer freeze? Or does Lightroom freeze but the rest of the computer runs properly?

Lightroom (Lr icon) or Lightroom Classic (LrC icon)? What version NUMBER?

What operating system version NUMBER?

A couple of things to try to see if the problem goes away.

  • Turn the GPU acceleration to OFF (Preferences->Performance->Use Graphics Processor set to OFF)
  • If that doesn't help, try reseting your preferences
