I just got back from a work trip, opened up lightroom, and it requires me to upgrade catalog before I get to open it. No way around it. Ten seconds in the upgrade, it crashes, without fault. Tried reinstalling lightroom, tried rebooting pc, nothing works. I see some tips on forums to lessen the catalogs, make them smaller, but I can't do this, since I can't open lightroom without it requiring me to upgrade. Even tried to revert to lightroom 12.5, but it still demands the upgrade before opening. This is horrible

If you are back to v12.5 after the catalog got upgraded for v13, then you might be trying to open the wrong catalog, the post v13 catalog. Instead of launching LrC via the start icon, use your OS file manager, locate the v12 catalog, double click on it.

The catalog never got updated, as lightroom crashed each time it tried to do it

Check that you do not have two versions of Lightroom installed. If you reverted to 12.5 and it still wants to upgrade the catalog, then that sounds like you are actually still launching version 13, not version 12.5.
