Constant Restarting with Lightroom and Photoshop

LR Classic, Photoshop 2022 (everything updated)

I've done everything possible to fix this and am hoping to get some info here. I took my iMac (version 12.2.1) to genius bar and they said nothing is wrong with it, but every single time I'm working on Adobe, the whole computer restarts several times. Adobe support took over my screen and changed a ton of settings, and it still restarts contstantly. I have no idea what to do! Here is the Panic I get after my computer restarts:

In general, kernel panics are predominately caused by third-party kernel extensions and hardware faults. The panic log rarely tells you where the problem might lie. Sometimes there are hints at what it might be related to, hardware-wise, but rarely anything concrete. 

I have looked up the issue on multiple forums, and all of them are pointing towards kernel or hardware issues.

You are working on macOS 12.2.1, and there are newer versions available. Please update the macOS to the latest version, which can fix underlying kernel and other operating system level issues. If the issue persists, please check with Apple support if they can diagnose faulty hardware.

As a case in point I had this with bad RAM. It would work fine until I did heavy lifting, like video rendering, then kernal panic. It was intermittent too, so took a while to find, even using memory tests.

Thank you, this is very helpful. I have contacted apple support again, and even though the genius bar diagnostics came back fine, we reinstalled OS. If that doesn't work, I'll be taking it back to the genius bar and asking about bad RAM. 

I'm curious how you finally figured out the culprit?

Hi @danielles81804077, I didn't see a notification on this one, apologies. I see you know the issue now. As to what I did, I took out sets of RAM until it stopped basically. When I placed them back again it started happening again. I did manage to get it to fail a memtest after that as well, but because it was so intermittent, it took ages to find.

Thank you for this info! I was actually very worried it was my RAM, so if the logic board replacing doesn't work, I know where to look next. Sounds like some intel Macs have logic board issues, but very hard to diagnose.

Computer re-starting (or in Mac terminology "kernel panic") is almost always hardware malfunction or bad/corrupted/out-of-date drivers (which, I'm told, is more of a Windows issue). Nevertheless, the problem is not software such as Lightroom Classic. A likely culprit (although not the only possible culprit) is that the computer is overheating; if it feels hot or unusually warm to the touch immediately after one of these shutdowns, then that is the problem. 

Your favorite internet search engine will find lots of articles on how to solve kernel panic problems on Mac computers.

In case anyone is interested, I finally have the answer to my computer issue. All of the replies were correct, it's not an adobe issue. After two more genius bar trips and 2 apple support calls, I finally got the answer that my Logic board needs replacing. Hope this answer can help someone else at a loss!

I went down the same path with my iMac, and Apple replaced the logic board. BUT the problem still exists! I can work in Lightroom for only about 30 minutes after I shut the iMac down AND let it cool off for 20 minutes. No idea of what to do next. I rarely have any crashes in other apps, btw.

Hi, popping on here for one last update. The issue persisted even after Apple fixed my logic board. After reading another answer here, I believed it was a RAM issue, as I used after market RAM. I recently found one ram stick to be defective and sent it back for replacement. I will update if that works or not.

I wish you good luck, hope to hear the results. I bought my iMac from Expercom, with 4x 32GB Ram modules pre-sintalled. It's supposed to be Apple-approved memory. I tried removing them, one by one, and restarting. The problem persisted with every combination. I can't test it it with NO ram installed... so, should I buy some other memory, in case ALL of them are defective?

You have to shut down your iMac and then let it cool off??? It's an overheating problem.

Your CPU is generating a lot of heat, which isn't dissipated properly. Check to make sure the cooling system (if there is one) is working properly. Make sure that all the vents are clear and that dust hasn't built up inside the case and that the vents are not up against a wall or piece of furniture so that air flow can happen.

Thanks, but all those things have been done. Got good air flow. I really need to keep it from over-heating so quickly and severely in the first place.
