To reproduce the issue:
From the Library Grid ("G"), select Named People ("O")
Next Select a number of Named People
Lightroom will show the following just above the Filmstrip Panel:
Folder name searched
Total number of Named faces found
Total number of Images
Total number of Named People selected (THIS TOTAL IS USUALLY WRONG)
The sample attached has 12 Named People selected but the Total below is 10

Not sure I understand. In screen shot below, there is a list of the names of the images I selected inthe "named pepople" segment and a count (145). The 145 count is the sum of the counts on each image displayed (selected or not). The cound of on each persons face is the number of images that person appears on.
What may be tripping you up is that if you have two people selected and each person has the number 1, the total is 2 but if those two faces are from the same photo the 2 faces only relate to 1 full image. So the sum of shown can be significantly larger than the number of images in the folder if individual images have more than one known face in them.
