Counting every photo before I can import?

I'm using LR Classic 4.0.1. it was fine for a while and now randomly it is terrible at importing. When i plug in my SD card it counts every photo like 1, 2, 3 all the way to like 2348 photos (for example). I don't know why it's doing this? Normally it doesn't count it, it automatically knows how many photos I have on my SD card and I can click import within a few seconds. Now it takes ages as I'm just waiting for Lightroom to count from 0-2348 until I can click the import button. I've tried optimizing my catalog and that doesn't help

Not sure what you mean by "counting". Do you see a counter on the screen? (Show us a screen capture, use the "Insert Photos" icon to include this in your reply) Do you hear a voice doing the counting?

Usually, the first thing I think about when someone says slow importing is hardware malfunction — bad camera card, bad card reader, bad USB port. Do some simple troubleshooting to see if a different camera card or different card reader or different USB port results in an improvement.

It is not an SD card issue. On Finder it automatically says 4032 photos on my SD card. On Lightroom is says "10, 11, 12, 13..." all the way up to 4032. It is slow and takes like 10 minutes to get up to 4032 before I can click the "import button"

Try selecting your SD card under the 'Files' header rather than 'Devices'. Doing so avoids along standing macOS level bug.

There's no need to get angry, Geoff. Calm down. I'm using LRC 13. This is not an issue with my camera or SD card. The only thing that changed was updating from LRC 12 to LRC 13. I don't have don't import duplicates changed.
