Is that the entire error message, or was there additional text? Where are the photos you are trying to import — card reader, camera, hard disk, somewhere else? Have you tried other import methods such as importing from your hard disk, and using different hardware to do the import??

Lightroom (Lr icon) or Lightroom Classic (LrC icon)? What version NUMBER?

So there was more information in the error message! Always good to give all the information in your first post.

When you say "no issue with the destination folder", exactly what did you check to say "no issue"? Also, earlier versions of LrC and predecessor Lr gave the error message you see when the problem was with the permissions on the source folder. What version NUMBER of Lightroom or Lightroom Classic are you using? How are you importing: ADD or COPY or MOVE?

The error message says :

"Could not copy a file to the destination folder because it is not writable"

This looks like a permission problem on the destination folder.

Move and Add are only available when importing from a hard drive. Card imports only have the Copy options to prevent data loss from people using Add to add the files from a card that they're about to wipe and lose those files.

Check that you've given Lightroom Full Disk Access:

Not normally, and even in those rare cases when you can do this, leaving photos on camera cards rather than a hard disk is not a good idea.

No. And as I've said and @dj_paige mentions, it's a really bad idea. As soon as you format the card, everything is gone, or worse, the card breaks and you can't even recover. You want to avoid using Copy? Well then drag the files from the card to either a location where you want to Add them, or to somewhere convenient to use the Move options. Either way leaving them on the card is a bad idea. I speak from experience on this .
