I've been using the same equipment for the past 3 years, so I highly doubt any of my hardware is causing this issue.

Also, I cannot tell you what version of the software I had when this began taking place since I opt to have my software update automatically. All I can say it that this issue has been happening since August / September.

PROBLEM:

When I click on the CROP tool icon in LR Classic CC, the image I am working on disappears and I am left with a blank "Darker Grey" background as if no image is currently selected. Upon deselecting the CROP tool, the image reappears.

Current Solution:

While image is not visible, click the CROP tool again to deselect the tool, then click it again to enable to tool. Sometimes I have to click it several times before the image finally reappears with the ability to crop / adjust.

Editing Settings:

1. Images are imported onto my local SSD for editing purposes. I do NOT edit the photos through the memory card. Memory card is unplugged.

2. This issue happens before I make any edits to the photos and after I make edits to the photos.

Steps I Have Taken To Resolve Problem:

1. Uninstall the entire Adobe suite including ACC & deleting all corresponding files associated with Adobe from my system.

2. Completely reformatting my Mac and NOT importing any old backup files.

NOTE TO ADOBE.... IF ITS NOT BROKEN.... DONT FIX IT!

Two things to try:

1. Go to the Lightroom preferences, performance tab, turn off the graphics processor option and see if that makes a difference.

2. Reset your preferences.

Thank you. This seems to have resolved the issue... for now...

I'll be standing buy to see what else they manage to break.

Side Note: Why wouldn't I want to use my GPU to help with image processing?

UPDATE: Unchecking that option has drastically slowed down my image processing time. Now when I make any adjustments, the system takes a few seconds to process the changes and then display them on the photos. In addition, when I go to crop the image, the same thing happens. When I try to change the angle of the photo, it does not happen as I click and drag, the motion is delayed by a few seconds.

Just as a reference, I had a similar problem on a Windows 10 machine:

Core i7 5820K @ 4 GHz

16 GiB DDR4 @ 2400 MHz

MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X, QHD screen

Samsung 850 EVO 250 GiB for the catalogue

WD Caviar Black 5 TB for the photos

Suggesting to disable GPU acceleration for more than just a test is ridiculous as it hurts performance very, very badly even on QDH (and I can imagine what it would be like on 5K).

I've found the culprit to be MSI Afterburner - normally used for GPU overclocking, I was using it just to control the GPU fans' duty cycle (under stock settings the fans don't spin up until the GPU core reaches 60 degrees C, I wanted to make them spin constantly at a low rate). For me, closing MSI Afterburner makes the bugs disappear and makes Lightroom run perceptibly smoother. I don't know if this applies to macOS, but if you have a utility to control fan speeds, try closing it.

Have similar issue now - when try to crop image despair, when unselect crop it appear  but stuckt and not changed.

Unchek GPU accelration help but slowdown work a bit. Probably adobe have still lack support new 20x0 nvidia card.

Really good info. I too have a 5820K @ 4. 24Gb Ram r9 390 8GB. I just flew off the handle because I just upgraded to windows 10 for various reasons. One of which being that I thought windows classic would finally accept my GPU. It does. and then I have a CROP TOOL problem. But alas, I was running MSI afterburner. Smooth sailing now. I don't need it for lightroom. Great info. Now if only the rest of my longstanding issues would melt away. Im hoping these little differences speed up image detail. Just got another 8gb of ram working too. I''ve always felt like my rig underperformed, and Adobe didnt utilize it well.

almost 1,5 years since this has been posted, but it just saved me a lot of pain. i have used lightroom classic for a long time while msi afterburner have been active, never caused a problem before now... its laughable that it still is a problem, but thats adobe in a nutshell. Again THANK YOU

I have the ongoing problem with the crop tool on Windows 10.  I've turned off GPU acceleration and it doesn't fix the problem.  As soon as I begin to crop, the image is replaced with grey,  Can't see what I've cropped.  This problem seems to come and go as new versions of Lightroom Classic are released.  Running now on most recent, 8.2.  Find I have to use Photoshop to crop, which works flawlessly.  Crop works flawlessly in Mac version.

In LR click on HELP, click on System Information, click on Copy. Paste that into a reply.

To other members with similar issue. Going forward with your issues will probably cause this discussion to get hijacked, advise posting your own discussion.

To all members running Windows OS with this problem, check your GPU driver for latest version, get it from the GPU chip manufacturer, not from Microsoft, not from the card seller, get it from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, not MS, not ASuS, Dell, Etc.

And unless you are running 4K or 5K, then the enable use of GPU is probably of no value, see :https://www.lightroomqueen.com/lightroom-performance-debunking-myths/

Thanks.  Here is system information.  The problem is beyond cropping -- it frequently goes to gray screen.  Change to another file and back restore the image display, but goes away often.

I should have noticed that the original posting was a year old, Hard to get results adding on to old discussions.

You really really should post your own discussion.

Brand new discussions attract more members.

When you create the discussion, do so in say three parts. Part one, the context, what is the issue. Give it a title like

LIGHTROOM FREQUENTLY GOES TO GRAY SCREEN

In the first set of comments state something like

Part 1 of 3

and state yore issues

In the second set of comments state

Part 2 of 3 System Information as follows:

and paste in that system information

In the third set of comments include some screenshots of the issues

Part 3 of 3 screenshots as follows:

paste in some screen shots

I too had the same issue and MSI Afterburner was the culprit in my case. The moment I uninstalled it from my laptop, the crop tool started working with no issue at all.
