Denoising bird images

Community Beginner ,

I have a number of bird images which are too noisy.  If I apply a mask to the background and run Noise Reduction, it seems to ignore the mask and denoise the entire image, which leaves the bird looking plasticky.  It would be a huge benefit if only the background were denoised, and the bird could be treated separately.

Are you accidentally clicking on the noise slider in the Detail Panel instead of the noise slider in the mask panel?
