Develop Module in LRC 14.3.1 consumes 100% COU, 80% GPU after update from LRC 13.4

Hi all,

since I upgraded from LRC 13.4 which worked flawlessly to 14.3.1 on my Macbook Air M3 on Sequoia 15.4.1 ; I see Cpu consumption extremely going up beyond 100celsius and GPU temperatures upt ot 80celsius;

It seems following to me:

- For some reason rendering preview data consumes much more CPU/GPU than before

- For some reason even consuming almost all CPU/GPU for rendering of Previews is much much slower

- For some reason on switch ot the next Image the preview seems to be rendered/caclulated again, CPU/GPU ruuning to 105c/80c degrees for about 2-3 seconds.

On LRC 13.4 this worked as expected, fast only short spikes of CPU and after rendering of previews very fast with low CPU as you woud expect from the 2nd fastest ARM CPU beside the M4; But even with more CPU-Power it seems all CPU is sucked up like in a black whole.

I deed already a lot

- purged review cache

- Resetted LR Preferences

- Deleted the review Cache and then started the LRC again

The Preview Cache for 81 Nikon Z8 Images need 5 minutes to be filled up, very slow with 400-500% of CPU running, creating a 950Mb sized file.

Going back is not easy for me as I would lost all edits I have done on these Images

I have processed 200-300 Images before on LRC 13.4 and never had an issue.

Please advice.

currently I fear getting my machine heat damaged using LRC 14.3.1

I know the Air is not a power machine because of missing fans

But all non-batch laod should really run fine on it, liked it proved before upgrading

Hi @Tron777! I'm sorry to hear about the performance issues you're having with Lightroom Classic.

Could you please check the following details and perform these steps to see if they help?

1. Go to Preferences > Performance and increase the Camera Raw Cache size to 10.0GB or more.
2. On the same tab, check the option to Use Smart Previews instead of Original for image editing and uncheck the option to Generate Previews in Parallel.
3. On the Performance tab, select "Off" from the drop-down for Use Graphic Processor.
4. Go to the General tab and check the box to Replace Embedded previews by standard previews during idle time.

After making these changes, quit and relaunch Lightroom Classic before testing the application.

Another thing we can try is disabling the plugins you have installed one by one to see if any of them are causing the issue. If one of them is outdated or not compatible with the current version of LrC, it could be causing performance problems.

Let me know how it goes!

Alek

Thanks a lot Aleke,

will dive into your suggestions tomorrow, it's already late.

Currently, I found an intermediate solution against overheating,
putting the M3 MacBook Air in Low Power Mode, No spike now over 60 Celsius both GPU and CPU;

Switching to the next Image in Develop is slow but ok, clicking into the Image for 100% View

lasts 5–7 seconds, ...
So at minimum, the Machine will not burn down anymore.
I will try your suggestions and come back to you;
starting with the removal of the Plugins so far
I am not aware of having them installed any of these myself.
Cheers
/Tron

Hi Aleke, mainly the disabling of the GPU did the Job,

also, Updating the M3 Air to OS X 15.5 did not help (was expecting it, as it is not an OS X Issue)

so when I am able to use the GPU again, with Version 13.x it worked great.

Also, how do I come back to Version 13.x as unluckily the Catalogue structure was updated with 14.x

which locks you in somehow into the unstable version

Hey @Tron777!
If you're looking to install an earlier version of Lightroom Classic, here's a handy guide that walks you through the steps:
https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/using/install-previous-version.html

Hope that helps — let me know if you run into any issues!

Cheers,
Alek
