Lightroom 5 sometimes opens wit a double selection. Instead a single selection, it select another, usually adjacent picture. This mode is indicated by a diamond in the upper right corner of the selected pictures in the Filmstrip panel. What is it good for and how the hell do I get rid of it?
I was not able to find any reference for this anywhere. If you are aware of a valid reference, please point me to it. Please, HELP!!!!!!!!!

You've got Compare view selected. Do the menu command View > Grid to get out of compare view. (See the menu for the keyboard shortcuts.)

Without a full screenshot it's harder to ascertain what might be going on. Normally, the diamond badges indicate the photos selected in Compare view and disappear when you go to another view.
Some troubleshooting steps:
1. Switch to View > Compare View then back to View > Grid View. Then restart LR. Does the problem still occur?
2. Reset LR's preferences:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/.
LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior.

LR is clearly confused, with selection behaving as if it is in Compare view even though it is in Grid view. Let us know the results of the two troubleshooting steps I suggested.

1) did not work
2) did, thanks!
However I am affraid it will come back. It happened before a couple of times. What made it disappear and what made it come back is a mystery that I would like to find out.

Thanks guys!
It is a similar situation except, a second display was not used for LR, nor was compare view. I very seldom use that view.

Good to know that resetting preferences solved your problem. It's unfortunate that users too often find it necessary to reset them.
