File saving question from SD card to your computer. I noticed that on my computer under the file where I uploaded pictures as a Raw file, once I imported them into Lightroom classic, it saved a duplicate picture under the computer folder as a DNG file. So instead of 600 something pics there was 1300 something in the folder on my laptop. I looked at previous folders because I didn’t think it had done this before and there was only the raw file in those. I only have about 8 sessions saved and the last 2 or 3 are like this but the first several only had the raw files and not a duplicated DNG file. I know after editing in Lightroom classic, that pic is saved as a DNG that I put into a different folder to finish in Photoshop. But, why is it automatically duplicating every picture into a DNG and having an extra copy in the computer folder ? I am just starting out and realize I need a new laptop with more RAM so I surely don’t need duplicates of these large files. I deleted the folder and the imports and re installed them and it just saved in Raw the 600 and something pics in the folder. I was like okay that was weird. But after importing them into Lightroom classic and working on them some, I went to look again and yet again it duplicated all the pictures into a DNG file and had 1300 something pics in that file folder. 🫣🤦🏻:female_sign:

I go into my Photos Folder and then select import up top and then click D:
and then I either click 'new' or 'all' or select individual pics. Say I picked just 2 pics
And then click 'Add' and the box comes up to pick which folder to add them to
that's it. They come over as only the Raw cr3 files but after I am in Lightroom classic working on some, I go back and look and there are duplicates of each photo in dng. I am not technologically savvy but thought I wasn't illiterate lol but I don't see an option to upload as copy or other files. 😩 I am new to all of this but my 1st several sessions didn't do this. I had looked and the only files in those are only the cr3 files. The last several also has duplicates in the dng. But I haven't changed anything. 🤷🏻:female_sign:
thank you so much for your time!!! 🫶🏼

Are you sure you don't have "Copy as DNG" selected when importing?

I don't even see an option to click copy or duplicate. I go into my photos and click import- D:- select new, all, or pick individual. Say I picked 2 photos--- then click add-- then it comes up to pick which folder to put them in. That's all. I'm not technologically savvy but I didn't think illiterate lol but I sure feel that way lol.

Your response shows how you import the photos from your SD card into the pictures folder on your C: drive, but not how you import them into LrC. My earlier post asked that you make sure when you import the photos into LrC that you are sure not to select "Copy as DNG". You should select "Add" when you import the files into LrC.
In LrC, in the Library Module, there is an "Import" icon in the lower left. If you click that to import photos into LrC yiou will get the screen shown in the attachment
You see the "Copy as DNG" is selected. That is not what you want. Select "Add".
You need to tell us how you are importing the files into LrC.

Yes, if the files are already where you want them, click "Add".

If the files were you wanted them, and you selected Copy as DNG, then you have your answer.
Selecting Add instead would have prevented the issue (RAW and DNG)

And FYI, after importing with the [ADD] option as stated- if you specifically want DNG files (You would want a good reason! and reasons are now very rare!), then in the LrC catalog you can go MENU > Library > Convert Photo to DNG... where you have the option to delete the original .CR3 files that are in the catalog.
