Help! I am unable to import Nikon RAW files to LR classic CC Desktop. Yes, I have the latest version installed on my computers as well as the latest version of Mac OS. Nikon D500 is also up-to-date. Nikon D500 has been out for a while so I am at a loss as to why LR is unable to read/import RAW files. The only version I can get to read the files is a 2015 version. Thoughts?

I get the window with the message "Could not copy a file to the destination folder because it is not writable."
"IF" you have already COPIED the images from card to external hard drive then in the Import dialog you should be selecting "Add" at the top instead of Copy.
The Error message you received is because you have selected Copy and the Drive/Folder you have selected in the Destination section of the right hand column does not have the proper permissions for LR to Write to th

Any chance you use the Nikon Transfer program to download the images from the camera? Some versions of that utility are known to corrupt raw images such that they cannot be read by Lightroom or Camera Raw.

No. I took SD card out of camera and downloaded straight from SD port in MacBook Pro to external hard drive. Attempted to import from external hard drive. I am able to import to 2015 version, but .........

Only thing I can suggest is that you share one of those NEF files via dropbox or similar and let others attempt to import and see what happens. I have no others suggestions.

I get the window with the message "Could not copy a file to the destination folder because it is not writable."

Okay, that's different. You need to check the destination folder or drive for permissions to ensure that there are both read and write permissions on that destination. This has nothing to do with Lightroom or compatibility with the NEF files. This is an issue with your operating system.

I think I am missing something because LR 2015 reads the files from the same external hard drive. Same OS.

"IF" you have already COPIED the images from card to external hard drive then in the Import dialog you should be selecting "Add" at the top instead of Copy.
The Error message you received is because you have selected Copy and the Drive/Folder you have selected in the Destination section of the right hand column does not have the proper permissions for LR to Write to that Drive/Folder.
Once you select Add the destination doesn't matter as there is NO destination involved. You are then ADDING images to the LR Catalog file, a Database system, from where they are already located, IE on your External Drive.

That did the trick! Thanks!
Just need to change "copy" to "Add."
Thank you and thanks to all you responded to my call for help. Much appreciated!

bit of a puzzle.
So you start LR
You click on Import
You place the memory card that was in the camera into a card reader (or perhaps already in)
You navigate on the left to the card, external hard drive, and to the correct folder
No icons pop up in the central window??
Can you post a screenshot.
