HDR images not displaying correctly when exported?

I'm having some issues with the HDR feature in Lightroom Classic. When I select the HDR feature in lightroom and export the image, with HDR export selected, the exported image does not look like the HDR preview. It looks like the 'Preview for SDR display' option.

I'm working on an m1 pro macbook with macOS Ventura which supports HDR. I thought maybe it was just the preview app so I moved it to the photos app and activated HDR display but no look, still looks like the SDR preview. I have also tried looking at the image on my phone and uploading to instagram, both of which are supposed to support HDR but neither display it properly which makes me think the issue is with the lightroom export.

Anyone know how to correctly display HDR images?

The preview app does not support HDR images correctly if you are not on the latest mac OS. It only works correctly on Sequoia. So if you are on ventura, it will not look good there. For photos, it depends on the operating system version you are on. Most likely to show correctly is AVIF file format which should work in Ventura. JXL will work only when you are on the latest Mac operating system Sequoia. Jpeg with HDR gainmap does not work in Photos. It will import but only show the SDR version eve

Thanks, I am going to update to the latest MacOS and try exporting as AVIF or JXL and see if it works.

Also HDR image upload to instagram is extremely flaky. It doesn't always work. You have to do it from the instagram app. It won't work from the share sheet from Photos. Even when you do it directly from instagram it often fails to include the HDR for no obvious reason. I've had most luck with AVIF files in the P3 HDR color space. but even then it doesn't always work correctly. It is supposed to also work for Jxl but I haven't been succesful with that myself.

I am having the same issue. I was struggling to determine if this was a macOS 15/ios18 issue or something with Lightroom. Previously, I'd edit in HDR, export to AVIF with HDR using the P3 color space, and export into Apple Photos. In Apple Photos, HDR displays fine whereas Preview does not. I am now seeing the same issue as you, but this is not limited to Lightroom Classic, but across the entire Lightroom suite. Lightroom on macOS, iOS and iPad exhibit the same behavior. Switching to JPEG XL also yeilds the same results as AVIF. My workflow worked great up until version 7.5. Now every export looks like SDR.
