HELP! Problem moving library from older Mac to newer Mac

I have a catalog that I have been working on in Sequoia on a Macbook Pro. I had to send that machine in for service.

So I copied the library folder to an old iMac running Ventura. I moved the image directory (which is on an external drive) to the old iMac.

I then worked for a few days on that iMac.

When the Macbook Pro was returned, I copied the libary folder back from the iMac to the Macbook Pro. I reconnected the image directory to the MacBook Pro.

Unfortunately, when I opened the library on the Macbook Pro, many of the edits I made are not there when I reopen the library on the Macbook Pro.

Adobe support has suggested:

  • rebuild all smart previews before backing up the older library
  • backup the library on the older computer and open that backup on the new computer

Neither of those worked.

I even turned off syncing, just in case some of the online images were retrieving old settings from the cloud.

It's bizarre. Even though the library is exactly the same from one computer to the other, when it opens, it's different.

Where it really shows up is in color labeling. The images that I applied color labels to on the older computer do not have those color labels turned on when I move to the newer computer.

Has anyone encountered this? Have you fixed it somehow?

Unfortunately, when I opened the library on the Macbook Pro, many of the edits I made are not there when I reopen the library on the Macbook Pro.

Please tell us step-by-step how you moved and then opened the library on the MacBook Pro, leaving nothing out.

When you say "many of the edits I made are not there", this implies that some of the edits you made are there. Am I understanding this properly? What do you see (please be specific and detailed) that indicates some edits are not there?

The step-by-step is clearly there in the original post

The edits that don't appear to pass over are the color labels.

Did you remember to also transfer your Custom Color Labels Template(s) from your old machine to your new machine and then select it as the default Color Label scheme in your new computer?

I only did what Adobe told me to do. Where are the Custom Color Labels Template(s)?

Let me clarify: Color labels that were applied to images in the original library passed over to the old computer, but color labels that were applied to images there and then passed back to the new computer, were not there.

  • On your old machine, go to Metadata>Color Label Set> and note which Color Label Set is selected.
  • If it is not: Bridge Default, Lightroom Default or Review Status, then you have created a custom template. You must find it on your old machine and place it into the same location on your new machine.
  • If it is Bridge Default, Lightroom Default, or Review Status, you must make certain the same set is selected on your new machine.

The location of the template can be found by going to Lightroom>Preferences>Presets and in the Location section, click the [Show All Other Lightroom Presets] button.
