I see an error message stating catalog is invalid when i try to open it in Lightroom Classic. I have been using this for years without any issues so i am concerned as to why i see this message now. Reinstalling LR and rebooting my PC did not help.

I have inserted an image below of the folder on my PC that contains the catalog file along with other folders. The v10 catalog file opened on Aug 30, 2021 is the one i use.

Request your assistance with this.

Please provide the version NUMBER of your Lightroom Classic.

Generally, it is not a good idea to put catalog files in a DropBox folder, as this can potentially cause the problem you are experiencing. Please unzip a recent backup of your catalog file, place the uzipped backup outside the DropBox folder, and then see if it will open.

I am using the latest version of LR Classic - 10.4.

I use Google Drive, not Dropbox. Will try out your suggestion and see if it works.

How should we interpret your statement "I use Google Drive, not Dropbox" when the error message clearly indicates it is looking for the catalog in a DropBox sub-folder?

I used DB in the past, but switched to Google Drive as DB was too expensive...and did not bother to rename the folder.

Google or Dropbox? In your screenshot:

GoldingD_0-1630805714212.jpeg

LrC is trying to open a file in Dropbox. Was that where it used to be, then you moved it to Google? And did you perhaps start having this issue immediately after the move? By default LrC trys to open the most recent catalog.

See my reply currently at bottom. Where I re-paste your first screenshot.

I stopped using Dropbox over 3 years ago and have been using Google Drive since then without any issues at all (till now). I did not bother to rename the folder, hence it is still named: Dropbox (RVK Photography).

My LR catalog is on my D drive (a local hard drive on my PC).

Catalog “not valid” — you most likely have to restore a recent backup of your catalog file. So, find your backups, unzip a catalog file, and then using your operating system, copy it into a brand new empty folder, double-click on it to open it.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs.

Returning to your first screenshot. Your working catalog. That sceenshot includes a lock file:

  • RVK Photography-2-v10.lrcat.lock.

Circled in red below

original.png

I asked if you had deleted it, and what was the result. Did you?

And that screenshot, that is from your Google drive?

Also, you may want to allow your file manager to show known extensions. So the .lrcat file, the catalog is obvious.Circled in Blue above.

If that is the catalog in it's current location, double clcik on it.

Thanks again for your response. The LOCK file you see in my screenshot above is not there in that folder anymore. I tried to open my LR catalog directly from this folder by double-clicking the file, but i still see the same error message.

My catalog is currently in my D drive, but it syncs to my Google Drive when i run my backup Google cloud backup software.

I have to add: the problem with my catalog began when Google directed me to stop using their old Backup and Sync software and transition to their new Google Drive for desktop application.

I have been backing up my LR catalog to Google Drive without any issues for the past few years.

I have two comments-

1) The Catalog you are using in your 'System Info' report is-

Rob_Cullen_0-1630819509519.png

How is this related to the 'RVK Photography-2-v10.LRCAT?

Is this a copy of the Catalog you are experimenting with?

2) It is known that if your catalog syncs to a remote folder (eg. Google Drive) while LrC is running, there is a high chance of catalog corruption.

Pause or stop any Google sync while using LrC and do not restore Google sync until you have closed and exited LrC.

Regards. My System: Lightroom-Classic 13.2 Photoshop 25.5, ACR 16.2, Lightroom 7.2, Lr-iOS 9.0.1, Bridge 14.0.2, Windows-11.
