I downloaded LrC for the first time and turned on sync as I have a lot of photos in the Adobe cloud that I use with LR. It synced some images, but i changed my mind and do not want to sync LrC with LR's images. How do I safely remove the images from lightroom classic WITHOUT affecting the photos in the cloud for lightroom?

LrC requires images in the catalog to live on a hard drive. When you turn on sync, LrC acts like a vacuum and downloads the images it finds in Lr cloud.
Removing images from LrC doesn't necessarily delete them from the hard drive where they were downloaded to. Also, it won't delete them from the cloud.
If you want to, you can delete your LrC catalog, and the photos it downloaded without affecting the photos in the cloud.

Certainly DON'T delete your Lr-Classic Catalog.! No, No!
You can first of all- turn off (Pause) syncing in the Cloud icon, then, if you wish, delete the images that have downloaded from the Cloud.
Photos that downloaded can be found (in the catalog) in a folder package that will look like- {Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Pictures / Lightroom / Mobile Downloads.lrdata }, or in a folder (and subfolders) that you have specified in the LrC preferences [Lightroom Sync] tab [Location]..
