1. "Save copy on device": that's what I used and there's no GPS data saved this way.
2. "Export as..." + "Save image": if you're going that route GPS data gets saved if the settings are correct (include metadata).

By @photopoeth

In LrM on iOS, both "Export As...." and "Save copy to device" have their own independant export settings, so if you want the GPS data to be exported using either method, then each of the export settings needs to have the "Location Info" option enabled.

My photos show the GPS information when viewed at lightroom.adobe.com. This applies to both the photos taken by my cell phone (which have the GPS automatically added) and taken by by DSLR or mirrorless camera (which have the GPS added in Lightroom Classic).

Is you question about Lightroom (Lr icon) or Lightroom Classic (LrC icon) or something else? Are the photos RAW or DNG or JPG? How are the GPS information applied to the photo?

Thanks for your answer. I just double checked.

You're right. I can see the GPS informaition in Lightroom for Desktop. But I cannot see the information in Lightroom Mobile on my phone. And when I save a copy image in my images on the phone, there's also no GPS information visible. But this is exactly where I need it, because I want to upload the image with its GPS information.

So I guess I have to clarify the title of this posting (if possible).

OK. Here are my answers:

Is you question about Lightroom (Lr icon) or Lightroom Classic (LrC icon) or something else?

It's about images synced from LrC to the cloud. They lack GPS information on my phone in the Lightroom mobile app and after savig them from there to my phones images to upload them in another app that would use the GPS data.

Are the photos RAW or DNG or JPG?

They are JPGs.

How are the GPS information applied to the photo?

Using the Web Module in LrC.
BTW: I've just noted, that images that were taken by my phone (with GPS data) don't show this information in the Lr Mobile app (although they do in the iOS app). Do I miss something?

But it is there since it's visible in the Lr desktop app. Apart from not seeing it, it bothers me that the data doesn't get exported to the camera roll. 😞

1) From Device

  • I have “Auto add from Device Photos” feature enabled so when I take a photo with my IOS device it automatically appears in a collection on my computer in Lightroom Classic.  The GPS information is viewable as follows:

  • Lightroom Classic: GPS data appears in the file on the computer that syncs with lightroom mobile.  In Lightroom Classic on right side panel look under EXIF data.
  • Lightroom Web: Lightroom.adobe.com find the image and click “I’ and click the blue dot and Latitude and longitude are displayed on URL address bar.
  • Device: Lightroom Mobile: Does NOT display the information. I do not believe this is a supported feature. However, dj_paige can confirm.
  • Device: Photo Application: Camera Roll:  Displays the information when you click the blue text under the image

Conclusion: Although you cannot see the GPS data in LRM ap, you can achieve what you want as follows: select the image in LRM ap (thee dots/select/tap image) select Share icon then “Save copy to device”. Open the photos ap on the device and tap “I’ button and you will see the GPS data You can then upload that image to another ap.

2) From Computer

A Raw file taken with DSLR is imported to Lightroom Classic catalog and then manually uploaded to Ligroom.adobe.com.  Tis location automatically syncs with Lightroom Mobile on the device and photos appears under “All Photographs”.

  • Lightroom Web: Lightroom.adobe.com find the image and click “I’ and click the blue dot and Latitude and longitude are displayed on URL address bar.
  • Device: Lightroom Mobile: Does NOT display the information. I believe the GPS data may have been removed when the file was synced from the cloud to the device. I say that because it does NOT show up on the devices photo application.  However, dj_paige can confirm.
  • Device: Photo Application: Camera Roll:  Does NOT display the information when you click the blue text under the image. I believe the GPS data may have been removed when the file was synced from the cloud to the device.

Conclusion: Because it seems the GPS data may have been removed when the file was synced from Lightroom cloud to LRM on the device you will NOT be able to upload the file with GPS data to another application or send it to a friend.

I think your conclusion is wrong. GPS coordinates are supposed to sync between LrC and the cloud, so if added to the image in LrC before or after syncing as a Smart Preview that GPS data should exist in the cloud. However any location data, including the GPS coordinates, is not yet exposed in Lightroom Mobile (iOS or Android), although it WILL be included on export (if the Location Info option is enabled in the appropriate export settings).

When subsequently viewing the exported image in either the Photos app (iOS) or Gallery app (Android), both of the apps convert the included GPS data into the actual location and should show that on a small map.

So if you are not seeing the same results as I am (and I've checked both iOS and Android), check your settings.

Alright, alright... here's the thing. There are two ways to get the image on the phone.

1. "Save copy on device": that's what I used and there's no GPS data saved this way.
2. "Export as..." + "Save image": if you're going that route GPS data gets saved if the settings are correct (include metadata).

Jim:

Thank you for the excellent explanation.  You Community Experts are wonderful, especially when you can show me how a perceived limitation can be overcome if the user has the correct settings.  I look forward to Adobe making the GPS information exposed in LRM.

I understand the differences, but that is no excuse. The location data should always be sent by default. I know a privacy reason for not including it. LRm should show all of the EXIF data. Not showing it only confuses what is attached to the photo. I love the GPS data because I shoot all over the place, and it is nice to have, but not showing it is annoying. Please add the option to show it in the mobile app. The weird thing is that it shows up in the web version.
