Probably Solution 2, Re-create the preference file. Also known as resetting the preference file. The preference file can get corrupted leading to buggy behavior, A corrupt preference file will survive normal uninstalls, reinstalls, updates, upgrades. In addition to the various preference settings, the preference file keeps various settings and states, etc. Note that resetting the preference file will revert many settings to defaults.
