I now have a big white label on screen

When I opened LR today you can see I have this big white photo label on screen blocking parts of the image.

how do I get rid of it?

That white rectangle is the info overlay, which older versions of LR don't correctly display on newer operating systems. Turn it off by doing the menu command View > Loupe Info > Show Info Overlay (the menu shows the keyboard shortcuts).
