Image view gets smaller?

I need a little help. I just switched to a Canon R5 from a Canon 5Dsr. I am using a Canon 16-35 EF L f4 lens on both bodies.

When I go into Lightroom Classic to cull images from card after shooting on the R5, the images are smaller. When I click on an image to view focus I expect it to go to 1:1 and zoom in but instead it zooms out. I also notice that the magnifying glass has a minus symbol and not a plus. Is there any way to reverse this? I want 1:1 to zoom in not out.

This does not happen with the 5Dsr images. I actually used the same card in both cameras with taking the same exact image and loaded them into Lightroom classic and the 5Dsr image starts normal and goes to 100% and the image looks great but the exact R5 image gets smaller when I click on it and looks quite bad.

The magnifying glass on the 5Dsr image has a plus symbol in it, but the R5 image has a minus symbol in it.

I have not changed one setting, only started to import images from the R5 now. Not sure if I'm supposed to go into Lightroom classic and change meta-data or settings because I am now using the R5?

Thank you,

James.

There is an actual view menu, try selecting magnification from that.

Your screen shot shows the Import dialog box, so we have to answer the question based on how previews work in there, which is different than how previews work after importing is complete.

In the Import dialog box, you are viewing the preview embedded by the camera. This means the preview pixel dimensions and quality setting depend on how the camera was set to render previews. One thing to check is what the preview settings are on your two cameras. It is possible that they are set differently; that would explain why the previews for the two cameras come in at different sizes. A lot of cameras are initially set to render smaller or lower quality previews so that the image files are smaller and use less space on the camera card (and computer). Also, the appearance of those previews (color, sharpness) is determined by the camera settings.

If you are looking for Lightroom Classic to process the images and generate 1:1 previews, that only happens after you click Import, and only if you set up the Import dialog box that way. So if the camera was not set to render full size previews, you aren’t going to see full size previews in the Import dialog box in Lightroom Classic.

For this reason, I find that it’s faster to just import the whole card and cull after import, because after import I have access to all of the culling tools, shortcuts, and view options. In the Import dialog box, I only deselect images that are obvious mistakes or images I’ve already imported.

So instead of how I have always done things with my 5Dsr, which was inserting card into card reader, and opening up images in Lightroom classic and choosing the ones I wanted and importing only those, that process may need to be switched now that I have the R5?

So I may need to import everything from the card and then after that, delete the images that I don't want to keep and possibly by doing it this way, the images show up the size that they're supposed to and the cursor allows me to enlarge it and not decrease the size?

No, I’m not saying you must import first, I only said that’s how I prefer to do it.

If you want to continue doing it as you have, then it’s necessary to figure out why the R5 previews are so small and if there is a way to change that in camera. Because again, the preview being shown in the Import dialog box is whatever the camera embedded into the raw file, so if that’s going to be changed, it probably has to be done somewhere in the camera menus. If it’s possible to make the R5 embed the same size previews as the 5DS R, then they should show up the same size in the Import dialog box.

Unfortunately, my last Canon was the 7D from 15 years ago, so I’m a little out of touch with how the Canon menus work now.

Finish the import then check the view options.

And you do a screenshot with Command-Shift-3 (entire display), Command-Shift-4 (selection), or Command-Shift-5 (full set of options.)
