Have you tried resetting the preferences? https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

Thanks, but no, haven't tried yet. Are these problem associated with preferences? Just asking, as I do not want to mess around with my prefs unless really necessary.

Not specificly these problems, but corrupted preferences are known to cause a lot of problems. It's not a big deal to reset them. Make screenshots of the preference tabs so you can reset everything quickly to what it was before.

Hi, gave it a try now. Followed the steps in the link provided above. In addition used empty cache, deleted the smart preview and 1:1, just in case. But it does not resolve the problem(s).
In particular, LrC shows me one file (newly added) on 100% view only on a comparable smart preview size, no matter if the previews have been deleted. Switch in the develop module - and you get a proper 100% view. Switch back, and you are back to a limited smart preview equivalent.
How to tell LrC that even if there is no smart or 1:1 preview just to load the original file?

Did you perhaps import the image with 'Embedded & sidecar' preview setting? If so, then the Library shows you the camera-generated preview, not a preview that is generated by Lightroom Classic. And some cameras only generate a small preview. Select the image and choose 'Library - Previews - Build Standard-sized Preview'. See if that solves it, and if that is indeed what happened, then next time when you import images, choose 'Standard-sized Previews' in the import dialog.

Thanks for the reminder to check for that possibility. Standard is set by default, including to create smart previews. And it would also not explain why some files do work correctly and others do not (or stop doing it), especially when they are from the same series, being imported at the same time and same settings.
Sometimes it helps to delete and create smart and 1:1 previews multiple times, or to switch to the develop module, zoom in 100% and switch back to the library. But honestly, that can't be a sustainable solution.
For testing, the option to work with smart previews in the develop module has been deselected, just to see if it makes any difference when switching back and forth between library and develop module (with the hope that it forces LrC to use the data from the original file and carry that over from develop to library). So far I can tell, it does not.

I'm out of ideas. I use Lightroom Classic 13.5.1 on MacOS Sonoma 14.6.1. too. My Mac is a MBP 16" with M1 MAX processor and 32 GB RAM, so very close to what you use. I have no issues like this at all, in a catalog with about 200,000 images from various cameras, including 60 MP images from a Sony A7RV.

Thanks anyway, appreciate the effort. It was worth cross-checking.
Cheers

just to add to the inital problem description - masking has become even more an issue. It just stopped working. When adding a mask, there is no way you can add or substract from the mask - LrC just does not respond to the command. However you can still reveal or hide, use the context menue....

Contact Adobe. This via a Chat. Before doing so, prepare your notes and information ahead of time as to be more efficient in communicating. Your info that you have posted in your Discussion is a start for the description, and probably have a copy of your LrC /Help/System Info/ as a text document on hand, so that you can paste or attach that into the chat.
To accomplish the Chat, bring up an Adobe webpage, and click on the Chat button. (see image below) This will start a Chat. At first the Chat will be with a chatbot, Typing “Agent” into the chat text field will bypass the initial chatbot. If an agent does not enter the chat then be assertive in requesting an actual Adobe Tech join in the chat.
In the Chat include (as mentioned above) a description of the issue, and probably your System Info. And include a link to your discussion.
You may want to ask for a phone call.
And please keep notes so that you can share them in your post for others to see.
For example, bring up:
https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html
and click on the Chat button, typically found in bottom right corner

Thanks, might be worth to give it a shot.
Just to complete my problem solving, it included the step above to delete preferences - it had no effect on the problems encountered. Also a de-installation of LrC and reinstall from the cloud did not resolve the issues.
I fear that the recommendation would be to migrate to the latest LrC version anyway...

Update to point numer two, masking.
Just encountered the problem again, could not add a second mask, clicking on the create new mask button did nothing, no respone.
LrC was in full screen mode - did exit that mode, and voilà - masks do work again. Furthermore it happend on the second screen, where LrC was put. Moving LrC to the integrated screen, both variants (full screen and non full screen) do work.
So maybe there is an issue with second screens. (I do not have another external screen to do more testing).
