After Lots of corruption of catalogues. Trying start again by importing the old backup into a v13 fresh catalogue. This process is close to 1/2 way mark after 4 days...

1. If I cancel the import what happens?

does what is imported information show up including my group folders? Or does it go blank? Or show photos but not groupings?

2. if (after that) I import the catalogue again will it get to the new things fast or create the hell of duplication?

I need to use my computer again M1 mini 16/512

Importing catalog A into a fresh catalog B does not alter catalog A in any way. Nothing is removed from that, only copied into the new one.

If it all goes wrong for whatever reason, you can give up on Catalog B and then try again with a new Catalog C from scratch, importing Catalog A into that. But I would not expect results to be any different - unless something else had interrupted the process for Catalog B.

I believe LrC proceeds photo by photo, but a cancelled import may or may not leave a usable Catalog B. Associated preview folders etc will only appear when that is opened for real. The cancelled-import catalog B can just be deleted.

Say that Catalog C's import of A completes: now both catalogs A and C have the same common set of files imported (they are now sharing in the use of those, IOW) with all the same organisation and edits and history attached in each case.. But C starts up with no smart previews or library previews as yet. These are going to need to be generated new. The same, I believe, for AI masks which being externally saved the same as previews are, would need to be re-generated for Catalog C's benefit. Brushed masks, graduated filters, spot healing and the like should be fine.

I'm asking about the behaviour of that import. Ive started fresh blank B cat. If I cancel A's import into B, will the groups be in B Cat? (At what point in the import process goes the groupings of A cat show up in B cat -start, middle, end or as photos are imported)?

2. If I cancel the import and I import the same cat B that happens? (Does it duplicate the photos  in the cat A or does it start from where it left off?)

3. if the groups are imported I can just sync photos (and rebuild previews)

I have 5 more days before full cat B gets into cat A... would be good to work.

cheers.

After an hour on hold, then being told to ring back another time and waiting 45 minutes for a text person, I have answers. Yes you can cancel and the images and collections may or may not be in the catalogue. If they are they maybe corrupt. Catalogues need to be brought in in one go. So today is day 7. We are over half way. The file sizes increase over time. The GFX files coming up.  If only there were a way of saving collections for easy install... adobe's customer service does not fit a company that has revenue of 4.8B USD

The problem is most likely hard disk malfunction. Run diagnostics on the hard disk, probably it needs to be replaced. If possible, copy the catalog file to a different disk and see if things work from that catalog on the different disk.

Free disk space? Is the Catalog's disk location participating in any sort of syncing to cloud?

By @richardplondon

Good point, that has been known to be a culprit in catalog corruption
